The Netherlands to lift 15-year ban on owning, breeding pit bulls THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - The Dutch government says it will lift a long-standing ban on pit bulls because it did not lead to any decrease in bite incidents. Agriculture Minister Gerda Verburg has informed parliament of the decision, which follows the advice of a commission of experts appointed to review the policy.

Instead, the country will focus on enforcing local leashing laws and owner education programs. Spokesman Koen Geelink said Monday the ministry hopes to have a new policy in place by year-end in which dogs that have displayed aggression will be tested by an expert. The country banned the breeding and possession of pit bulls in 1993, after three children were killed by the dogs.

Great news for the Netherlands.
Premier Dalton McGuinty already knows Breed Bans don`t work.
All Canine Experts and Organizations testified to that fact at the Committee Hearings.
The Ontario Ban never had anything to do with Public Safety.
If it did and Breed Bans worked, they banned the wrong Breeds.
Those Hearings(Especially the testimony by the OVMA)
http://www.ontla.on.ca/committee-proceedings/transcripts/files_html/2005-01-24_M009.htm#P672_181318
are an eye opener for anyone who thinks that the Ontario Gov`t actually based the Ontario Ban on any facts,Science or Expert Testimony.
They simply reacted in an uninformed manner(to look as if they were doing something)to a high profile incident.
(2 dogs being assaulted by a drunk.
If a drunk had me in a headlock I`d fight back too.
That incident kind of disappeared from the radar screen.
Rumors have it,those dogs weren`t exactly family pets.)
I don`t think the Premier of Ontario will admit to being wrong.I think he will have to be told to remove his Ban by the Ontario Superior Appeal Court.
He has already been told that the term Pit Bull Terrier was vague and unconstitutional.
So basically now all he has left in his Ban are the 3 rare Pure Breeds and dogs that he can prove are Substantially similar.
