Guest post - Dear Mr. President

Animal welfare advocates are often accused of not being able to "move on" after the infamous Michael Vick cruelty case. It's hard enough knowing of his crimes and seeing him climb back on his pedestal as a sports hero, but our morale took an extra dive when we heard that the US President publicly supporter his "second chance". We like what Emily on Vancouver Island, pit adopter and advocate, had to say.

Mr. Obama,

I have to say first off that when you were elected President, I was over the moon excited. After 8 years of worrying about your country based on their ability to vote a dumb, ignorant guy into the White House (and not just once), I believed there was hope when you came in.

You believe in many amazing core values that I think would make your country better, like health care. Great! I've seriously been a big fan, I even bought and wore an Obama shirt! I was super happy when you decided to get a rescue dog also, although that Portuguese Water Dog isn't really a "rescue", and I would have liked to see you follow through an adopt a shelter dog, but at least you tried.

However, I have to admit, I'm pissed off at you. I heard about the phone call you made to give praise for the Philadelphia Eagles giving Michael Vick a second chance. If you can imagine the sound of screeching tires as my love for you comes to a sudden halt, insert that noise *here*. Obama, you are the PRESIDENT of the United States. You are the first non-white President. You are a symbol of CHANGE for your country and the world. Because of that, people look up to you. Kids look up to you! My son, a 6 year old Canadian kid, LOVES you and thinks you are awesome.

Lets review what Michael Vick did, just to be clear. I'm not going to candy coat it, either. Michael Vick fought dogs brutally for pleasure and money. He raised dogs specifically for this purpose. He is an adult and knew that what he was doing was wrong. We know that aside from fighting dogs, he was restraining female dogs on a "rape stand" and forcing them to breed. We know that he killed AT LEAST 13 dogs. These dogs were either sick or not "good enough" for him, so he killed them. And not even like "I'm going to take her to the vet and have her put to sleep". He murdered them. We know for a fact that he beat them, shot them and in at least one case, he killed a dog by slamming it into the ground until it was dead. We know that he watered dogs down and then used electricity to kill them. These are nasty, insane things that in my opinion, healthy, normal people could never do.

He would take regular family pets and throw them into the ring with the trained fighting dogs because he thought it was "funny" to watch them die. He ripped out the teeth of some of his more passive dogs so that they couldn't fight back when he was training dogs to fight for him. And, here's a news flash, he'd most likely STILL be doing it if he wasn't busted.

Michael Vick didn't wake up one day and say "what I am doing is wrong and I should pay for my mistakes". He was BUSTED and forced to go to jail. He served a bit of jail time and got out...heading straight back into the limelight and right back to making millions. This is not the kind of man who I would ever let my son idolize or respect. So why, Obama, did you congratulate them for giving this sort of person a "second chance"?

There are plenty of people in your country who deserve a phone call from you. There are people who helped clean up after 9/11 and got sick from breathing in hazardous dust who could use your support. There are teachers in the inner city fighting to help educate kids surrounded by guns and gangs. There are single moms raising their families on food stamps, people feeding your homeless, nurses caring for your sick. GOOD people. And yet Michael Vick, killer of dogs, deserves your time? I try to teach my son to stick up for those who are being bullied, not support the bullier. I urge you to do the same, and publicly recant your support for Vick. As the President, you have the obligation to do the right thing and be a role model for those who look up to you.

If you are going to make a phone call, call the people who worked on the front lines at Bad Newz Kennels when they raided the compound. Ask about the brutal details of what Vick did there to those dogs. At least then, you will know every ounce of what you endorse when you support a man like Vick. I'm living with a dog covered in scars, and I would hope that if there would be an outpouring of support around that, that it would go to the people involved in her rescue and not to the people responsible for allowing it to happen.

Shame on you Obama. Not only do I not allow my son to look up to people who do the kinds of things that Vick did, but I don't allow him to look up to people who support them either.

Norah and puppy update

We've had our hands full with 10 puppies to care for, vet, and re-home, after taking an emaciated momma dog and her babies into our program last month. Happily, the pups are now fully weaned and healthy, and 9 of the 10 are with their new families.

But perhaps most satisfying is seeing the progress our momma dog has made. Norah came to the SPCA as a severe starvation case, with her ribs jutting out and every knob on her spine visible.

It's taken a month but with lots of TLC and small, digestible meals, she's the beautiful and healthy girl she deserves to be. Look at her today!

Norah is a happy, loving girl looking for her forever home. She gets along with other dogs and loves kids. Because of her background of neglect she does need some "boot camp" on basic training but she's already learning fast. Her foster mom says that with her scrunched nose grin and wiggling tail nub, she's hard not to fall in love with.

Loki's Christmas Wish - Breaking Records!

Loki's Christmas Wish Fund has always been a bright spot in the holiday season. Our rescue activities happen year-round, but in December we take a little extra time to connect with the under-resourced shelters in our community and put homeless pets on our shopping list.

Each year, the program chooses an under-resourced shelter in the communities HugABull serves, and collects donations from our supporters. Cash, bedding, toys, food and treats are collected through volunteers and drop-off points, and donated to the chosen shelter to help them through the holiday season and beyond.

This year we expanded our network to the Okanagan region in addition to Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The response in all three areas has been spectacular! A few highlights include:

In Victoria, Your Pet Pals has donated their window and an entire corner of their store to promoting and collecting for Loki's (above).

In the Okanagan/Interior region, we've had amazing support in just our first year. Wayside Printers donated printing for flyers and Hagen's Travel ran an ad for us. Tail Blazers is not only providing a drop-off location but providing incredible discounts to anyone who purchases items for donations.

And in Vancouver, we had an unexpected army of holiday angels in the form of a company called Aerocar. This group has been collecting for shelter animals for months, and after hearing about Loki's they decided to send donations our way. They have an enormous amount of toys, treats and goodies to share - far more than one shelter is able to store. So we've been able to expand our list of recipients!

Another cruelty seizure. Puppies in need.

Two weeks ago, The Province newspaper published this article about a cruelty seizure in Surrey - which included an emaciated momma dog and 10 tiny puppies left to starve in their own filth. Our hearts went out to the poor girl and we desperately wanted to help.

HugABull is still paying vet bills from another cruelty seizure earlier this summer (involving 19 puppies) so we weren't sure we could afford another litter. Furthermore, we try to focus our resources on older dogs in the shelter system, as they face more barriers to adoption.

But at the end of the day, we couldn't turn our back on this poor, skeletal momma dog who was trying to raise her puppies in a noisy and unfamiliar shelter environment. We went to meet her on Saturday and she passed her temperament test with flying colours - wiggling and dispensing kisses for our volunteers.

This weekend, momma dog Norah moved to her foster home where she is warm, safe, and has plenty of attention. It's a happy coincidence that the foster mom is the adopter of Rosie, one of our "mange girls" from the Surrey rescue who is now fully recovered and the happiest little girl you can imagine.

So far mom and pups are doing great. Norah is eating well and already starting to relax - even initiating a play session with little Rosie. When the puppies are weaned in a few weeks, Norah will go to a permanent foster home on her own, be spayed and put up for adoption. At that time we hope the puppies will be able to go directly into foster-to-adopt homes with HugABull or our rescue partners Bully Buddies and Respect-A-Bull.

For now, things are looking good. All we need is 10 puppy names.

Five pups will be named by the top five donors to Floyd's veterinary care, because without your support of Floyd we would not be able to afford these puppies.

HugABull’s first online auction!! Items needed.

Our annual fundraiser is going digital!

Since our supporters live throughout BC and across Canada, we realized that the only way to include everyone is to take it online.

So, starting mid-November we will auction off a selection of items through eBay. If you have something you’d like to contribute, we’d love to hear from you. All proceeds will go directly to helping the dogs in our care.

Items do not necessarily have to be dog related! We are looking for things that are:

- New and in good condition

- Minimum $20 in value, to offset our shipping and transaction costs

- Easy (and legal) to ship within Canada

Some things on our wish list include:

- Anything you would find on a store shelf. Toys, sports equipment, electronics, you name it.

- Gift cards from established services or businesses.

- Gift baskets.

Ideally, we would like confirmation and a photo of the item by Wednesday, November 10 in order to ensure it is listed in time. Our goal is to have everything sold and shipped out well before the holidays.

Book Review: Love Like a Dog

There are a number of great pittie-themed books on our reading list this year and Anne Calcagno’s Love Like A Dog was one of them. So imagine our delight when she put a couple of copies in the mail for us to review! We appreciated the books, and we were flattered that from way across the border, she identified us as a reputable rescue she wanted to support.

Our review? A unequivocal two paws up! It’s clear it was written by a bullie breed owner as the writing entirely captures the essence of this breed – their extremely human-oriented nature, their athleticism, their tenacity.

Love Like A Dog is a story of a young boy, Dirk, who along with his single dad is adopted by Bull's Eye, a stray pittie who quickly becomes an integral part of the family. This leads to increased involvement in the bullie community and competitive dog sports – at first a positive experience that brings the family together, and Bulls Eye thrives.

Soon, though, Dirk’s father becomes exposed to the darker elements of the pit bull world, and greed takes over. This leaves the teenaged Dirk to risk losing the only family he knows, in the name of his best friend and the breed he has come to love.

The story weaves together many dimensions of the pit bull experience: the joy of a pit bull as a family companion, the reputable breeders and sports enthusiasts that show the positive potential of this breed, the rescue community, and the widespread abuse they endure at the hands of fighters and irresponsible owners. It's a wide range of perspectives, but Calcagno brings them to life with relatable and vibrant characters (human and canine).

I found myself staying up late to finish chapters, eager to learn what happens with Bulls Eye and his kin. There’s sadness in this story, but there is hope and there are a lot of great moments that will make a pit bull owner smile in recognition.

Is your family DOGSAFE?

Many of us have taken a first aid or CPR course, but how much of that knowledge would translate to animal care? Would you know what to do if you saw a dog hit by a car? How to best measure circulation and breathing? How to tell if a limp requires a day of rest or an immediate trip to the vet’s office?

DOGSAFE Canine First Aid training programs equip you with this information and more. Founder Michelle Sevigny is committed to improving the safety of all dogs in our community, and as she writes on her website, “Prevention of injury is the key, however, accidents do happen. What you do between when an injury happens and when veterinary care is available will greatly affect a dog's chances of a full recovery.”

Michelle has always been a strong supporter of dog rescue (her demo dog Monty is one) and HugABull in particular, and this summer she offered to sponsor a full day Canine First Aid Level 1 course for HugABull directors and senior volunteers. Considering the dozens of dogs we work with each year, this was a fantastic opportunity to hone our handling skills and better serve our dogs, foster homes, and adopters.

The session was a full-day, hands-on course, focused on assessing and stabilizing injured dogs. As with human first aid, the priority is to evaluate airway, breathing and circulation – and DOGSAFE allows you to learn by doing, using a specially designed canine mannequin.

DOGSAFE also covers common canine emergencies – poison, skunks spray, bloat, vomiting, and broken bones to name a few – giving you the tools to take quick and appropriate action should they occur.

Even the most experienced dog handlers amongst us walked away more confident and knowledgeable, eager to recommend the course to any dog lover. DOGSAFE equips you in case of any canine emergency – whether in your home with your own dog, or out in your neighbourhood.

We asked for help with Floyd's medical bills, and we could not have been more inspired by your response. We have received 26 donations to date, ranging from $10 to $300!

This has been phenomenal, not only by helping us through a precarious financial period, but by reminding us how very much you care. Your supportive words, and the time and thought behind every donation is so much appreciated by all of us who work on the front lines.

We are pretty sure Floyd knows how lucky he is, because he is a thoroughly happy boy completely in love with his new life. He has settled into foster care and has wonderful house manners (even around the grouchy cat who won't play with him). His health status overall is good, although he's fighting a nasal infection as a result of the untreated trauma to his face.

Can you sponsor Floyd?

Lauren, one of our Foster and Family Placement Directors, was visiting a very small and under-resourced animal control facility two weekends ago. In the concrete kennels with no bed or blankets, there were three pit bulls to be assessed for entry into our program - and slated for euthanasia if not matched with a home or rescue.

Lauren's eye was immediately drawn to Floyd, a black male pittie. His muzzle was crooked, as though someone had tried to push his nose off his face. As she poked and prodded it became clear that something was very wrong. He was in pain, though in true pit bull style his delight at human contact overcame his discomfort, and he wagged and wiggled his way through the exam.

The animal control staff didn't have the resources for vetting, and since Floyd was eating normally and seemed so happy, they didn't think there was a medical emergency (in any case, if he was diagnosed with a serious injury, they'd have no choice but to euthanize).

Lauren rushed Floyd to Southpoint Veterinary Clinic, where he was given painkillers and surgery to correct a severely dislocated jaw. Thankfully, his prognosis is good. Because he was untreated for so long, Floyd will never have 100% normal function or appearance, but he will be able to eat, play, and live a long and healthy life. Floyd is recovering beautifully in foster care, with a sweet temperament and a love for every creature he meets (human, canine or feline!).

After the Surrey rescue of 23 dogs earlier this year, HugABull is still recovering financially and cannot afford to pull dogs with severe health problems. However, we couldn't leave Floyd in a cold cell only to live out a few more painful days before being euthanized. Southpoint veterinarians felt the same way and provided us with a deep discount, but it is still more than we can comfortably afford.

We don't regret our decision to take Floyd into the program - not for a second - but it does add to a growing pile of vet bills. If you have $10, $25 or $50 to help us with Floyd's care, it would help immensely. BSL - Reporter Christie Lagally gets it right!

Reporter and animal welfare champion Christie Lagally has published an eye-opening column in the Richmond News. She points out the failures of breed-specific legislation (currently in place in Richmond) and the demonstrated success of the Calgary model.

The good news is that many city councillors have taken notice and will be present at next week's event on better dog legislation. We've had a tremendous response from the public as well, and all seats are full!

However, we are saving a few last spots for last-minute RSVPs from city council and media, so it's not too late to contact your city policy makers and request that they attend - particularly if you live in Burnaby, Chilliwack, Pitt Meadows, Langley, North Van, or Delta. We have no RSVPs from these cities to date.

Please take a few minutes to make your voice heard! It does make a difference.

Better Dog Legislation Forum - how you can help!

As the event grows nearer and our guest list expands, we are working hard to make sure Bruce’s message reaches as many people as possible – and that it is an event to remember.

The problem with "pit bull" attacks

On Friday, a young girl was attacked and severely injured by her neighbour's dog. By Monday, we began hearing about a "pit bull attack" and we braced ourselves for pointed fingers, calls for breed bans, and the usual outcry that accompanies these media reports.

The SPCA was called in to investigate and soon clarified that the dog was a German Shepherd/bull terrier mix. Although we occasionally see bull terriers targeted by breed specific legislation, they are physically and temperamentally very different from the three breeds commonly defined as pit bulls: American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and American Pit Bull Terriers.

The bad news? The "pit bull" headline stuck in many cases. In this Global BC broadcast (scroll to 14:37) they included "pit bull" in the caption even though they mention the dog's exact breed mix several times in the interview.

The good news? Once the "pit bull" label was peeled off, and the SPCA was asked to comment, the news report became a lot more balanced. The news angle turned to factors behind bites - sexually intact dogs, undersocialized dogs, and children who approach dogs inappropriately. If BSL was brought up, it was to point out its flaws, and the SPCA spoke out loud and clear about it.

It's really encouraging to see this. Would the angle have shifted in this direction if the attack had indeed been a "pit bull" incident? We don't know. We'd like to think so, and we'd like to live in a culture where reporters hear about a dog bite and look at all the factors, not just breed, before filing their story. In the meantime we'll hope this is part of a trend, and keep working to encourage it.

While many cities struggle with animal control policies, the city of Calgary has become a case study in best practices using a common sense and non-breed-specific approach. Their Dangerous Dog Legislation has reduced dog bites by a staggering 75% and Calgary now has one of the lowest bite rates in North America. Perhaps most interestingly, the program operates at a profit due to increased enforcement and fines.

The visionary behind these policies is Bill Bruce, Director of Animal and Bylaw Services. HugABull is pleased to host Mr. Bruce in Vancouver for a forum on effective dog legislation, speaking about his experiences, challenges and successes in implementing Dangerous Dog Legislation.

Help us create an event for real change

Thanks to an Animal Welfare Grant from the City of Vancouver, HugABull will be hosting a remarkable event on Thursday, September 9 (please note date change). Bill Bruce, the visionary behind Calgary's dog legislation - the most humane, the most profitable, and the most effective in Canada - will be our keynote speaker!

We need a lot of help putting this event together in a short time frame, and we're seeking volunteers to join our event planning committee. Duties may include phone calls, emails, correspondence, event logistics, managing RSVPs, and helping out on event day.

We would ask that you could commit a minimum of four hours a week up until September 20th. Most of this work can be done on your own schedule, and from home, but ideally you will be available for occasional meetings or activities in the Greater Vancouver area, and for the event itself.

There will be plenty of opportunities to volunteer for individual tasks, or on the day of the event, so if you can't join the committee, there are plenty of other ways you can help! Please email info@hugabull.com if you are interested and looking for an unforgettable (and fun) summer project.

HugABull the Movie

Derick Groves, a very talented filmmaker in Victoria, shot and produced this short film about pit bull misconceptions and abuse, and what HugABull is doing to help.

Derick and his partner Michelle were foster parents for HugABull almost two years ago, until their strata council decided not to allow pit bulls in their building. While they were disappointed and angry, they decided to find other ways to help, and Derick applied his considerable talent and hours of time to our cause.

We think he did an amazing job, and we challenge you to watch this short film without a tear in your eye. Enjoy, and please share it widely!

Pet Talent Show and Fundraiser on July 18

As we sign adoption papers and receive final vet bills from the 23 seized dogs from Surrey it becomes clear that fundraising is still urgently needed.

Luckily, we have many creative and dedicated fundraisers on our side, helping to make a dent in the large costs associated with this rescue. Like the SFU students behind Project4Pets, a group with a mission to raise awareness of animal cruelty issues and to promote a culture that values pets and animals.

Project4Pets will be hosting Talented Tails, a pet talent show and celebration on Sunday, July 18 near Commercial Drive in East Vancouver. There will be prizes and gift bags along with a spectrum of family friendly events – a barbeque, bake sale, face painting and tons of information and resources for pet owners of all breeds.

What makes it even better? All proceeds are directed to HugABull to cover vet care for dogs like Knoxx, below. Once a tiny, neglected and sick puppy, he's now thriving in a great home and even gets to go camping!

A Summer of Support

Since the May rescue of 23 dogs in Surrey, we have been humbled by the amazing support of the pit bull community. Six weeks later we finally have time to take a breath, and the first thing we want to do is thank the many people who made this rescue project possible.

Local pit bull rescue Bully Buddies took five of the puppies into their care, including two with severe mange. They have taken wonderful care of these dogs - all are now thriving and destined for great homes.

The organizers of The Petnership Project heard about the 23 dogs through TnT Shar Pei Rescue and immediately wanted to do all they could to help. They put a spotlight on HugABull as a featured rescue and helped us secure widespread media coverage in multiple radio stations, on CTV, and in The Province. (We'll be participating in their rescue showcase at their event on June 19 and 20 in Vancouver - come see us there!)

HugABull now in the Okanagan

As an organization run exclusively by volunteers, we get very excited when new people join our steering committee. With the addition of Leah Gilmour, our Kamloops/Okanagan representative, we can expand our services into the Interior - supporting families, working with shelters, building our network of foster homes, and ultimately saving more dogs.

Leah has been a fan of bully breeds for years. She fell in love with a sweet, black, uber-affectionate little pit bull named Ace years ago, and after researching the breed and watching countless YouTube tributes she became determined to adopt one. The BSL in Edmonton, her city of residence at the time, was a deterrent but she persisted and added two pit bulls to her family that already included Marlon (a Boston Terrier) and 10 snakes! Stella is an AmStaff from Alberta's Pit Bulls for Life and Rufus is a mixed breed from Ontario that looked "substantially similar" enough to a pit bull to be sent out of the province.

Attracted by the sunshine and dog-friendly lifestyle of the Okanagan, Leah and her hsuband moved to Kelowna last year. She's been active in the HugABull community and eager to do her part to extend our services to new areas of BC.

Leah will be reaching out to shelters and services in the Interior to build partnerships, and recruiting volunteers and foster homes in the region. We'd like to extend a warm welcome to Leah and her family, and invite any pit bull owners, advocates or supporters in her area to get in touch! 23 Dogs - Update!

It’s been almost a month since the seizure of 26 dogs from a property in Surrey, and the past weeks have been some of our busiest. Together with the dogs previously in our program, we had a record of 36 HugABull dogs at one point!

All of the 23 dogs transferred to local rescues were in poor health, and many of them got worse before they got better. Almost every dog had severe internal parasites and some degree of kennel cough. The puppies came to us with malnutrition and underdeveloped immune systems, and most developed some degree of bronchitis or pneumonia. Many had to go back into intensive care at the veterinarian's office.

A couple of the puppies started limping and xrays showed hairline fractures and soft tissue injuries. We believe that poor nutrition and lack of proper mobility in their first months of life left them with poor bone and muscle development.

The five mange pups are in wonderful homes who are administering the medication and care they need to get healthy. They are playful little girls and their beautiful coats are starting to fill in.

We have received so many donations of supplies, food, and cash since our last update – as well as many generous offers to foster and provide transport for these dogs. Applications for puppies came pouring in, but even after adoption fees are collected we will be just over 50% of our fundraising goal (when all is said and done the costs and vet bills for the 17 dogs currently in our care will likely exceed $8000).

Thankfully we have sponsors who continue to step forward, and some dedicated volunteers organizing events like Hungry for HugABull in Victoria, a Saanich car wash, and a special showcase at the Vancouver Petnerships event to fundraise while we focus on getting these dogs healthy and into the homes they deserve.

Are you CGN ready?

We are huge fans of the Canine Good Neighbour(CGN) designation. It's a Canadian Kennel Club initiative where dog and handler face 12 challenges encountered in every day life. Successful dogs receive their CGN designation - acknowledging your dog's good manners and your commitment to responsible ownership.

The CGN is encouraged for all breeds, but for pit bull owners in particular, it's a wonderful way to show friends, neighbours, landlords and city councillors what great citizens our dogs can be. In some jurisdictions, like Nanaimo, BC, it can also exempt us from Breed Specific Legislation.

Not sure if you're ready? You might be closer than you think. The test requires basic obedience and self-control - not perfection! For just $25 a session, it's worth a try.

23 dogs in 24 hours! Update, thanks, and next steps.

Thanks to the incredible support of the HugABull community, we now have foster homes designated for all 23 dogs from last week's SPCA seizure. This is an amazing accomplishment and we are so proud and grateful for the dozens of people who stepped up to save these dogs and give them a future brighter than anything they've ever known.

Thank you to everyone who Twittered, Facebooked, emailed, phoned and posted for foster homes. A very special kudos to Bully Buddies (who took five puppies), Cambie Animal Hospital (who boarded and treated the dogs with barely any notice), and - of course - the SPCA who took these animals out of deplorable conditions and called us.

As exhilarated as we are, we know that our work has only begun. The dogs need significant vet care, and adoption fees won't even begin to cover costs. All of the 17 dogs in our care need vaccinations, spay/neuter, and deworming. All puppies have some degree of respiratory infection, and others have gastrointestinal problems. Three of them have mange so severe they are bald and bleeding (that's one of them, at left). The adults have open and infected wounds, and one may need a leg amputation.

It's going to be a long and costly project to get these dogs healthy and into loving, responsible homes, and we'd love your help! We have a very large number of puppies coming into our program! Age range is 2 to 3.5 months, all of them with beautiful temperaments and beautiful looks. Some have gone into foster care and some are at the vet pending treatment for kennel cough and mange, but HugABull is working with other local rescues to get all of them into foster care.

Celebrating the life of Dizzy, a perfect ambassador

Many people live their entire lives without touching as many hearts as one humble dog did in just a couple of years. HugABull mourns the passing of Dizzy, an organizational mascot and extraordinary ambassador.

Brindled Dizzy came to us with a grey face and a spotty history. Ultimately landing at the Vancouver SPCA, he won the hearts of volunteers and staff with his doe eyes and cuddly nature. Dizzy would nestle into legs, laps, faces…whatever human contact was available.

Word circulated quickly in the rescue community about this cool little dog, and HugABull director Shelagh came to check him out. She saw a true pittie that couldn’t be gentler and more people-loving, and decided to foster him herself.

That’s how Dizzy added a couple more hearts to the collection: his canine sister Bailey, normally indifferent to other dogs but devoted to Dizzy, and Shelagh. Although as a professional trainer and rescuer Shelagh was used to seeing dogs come and go, Dizzy was special. The minute the first application came in for his adoption, Shelagh realized she couldn’t let him go.

Always the first out the door for a visitor, and the last to leave someone’s company, Dizzy greeted everyone with a smile and a helicopter tail. He quickly became HugABull’s “go to” dog whenever we needed a friendly, well-behaved pit bull to show off. He accompanied Shelagh on countless interviews, home visits, and rallies – and could always be counted on to nuzzle the camera and schmooze even the most hard-hearted breed foes. When we learned of his passing, people throughout the community shared how he had changed their perception. He made an impression on everyone he met, and convinced many to let a pit bull into their lives.

Last summer Dizzy and Shelagh participated in an SPCA program teaching children about appropriate interactions with dogs. Dizzy passed his temperament assessment with flying colours (of course) and thrived on the attention while doling out kisses and wags to little ones. He was such a star that Shelagh planned to certify him as a therapy dog for children’s hospitals.

Dizzy was the inspiration and the “Diz” behind Dizine Canine, Shelagh’s training business and daycare. He was a wonderful little daycare dog, playing happily with new doggie friends but always preferring to snuggle in against a visiting human.

Although not a young dog, we estimated his age to be between 8 and 10 and thought he had many years of ambassadorship left. We were shocked to hear he was diagnosed with canine lymphoma. Shelagh knew it was a fast-acting disease but had no idea that only three weeks later, he would be laid to rest.

Dizzy’s passing drew many tears and beautiful memories. For many of us, he was the little brindled face of HugABull and the dog that is everything we love about pit bulls.

Dizzy was laid to rest in the arms of his family on Wednesday, April 14. He will always be remembered, and his name will always be synonymous with the sweet, cuddly, and over-the-top loving temperament that exemplifies our love for this breed.

Victoria EVENT (and CGN Test): Everybody and Their Dog Walk

This event will include a Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) Test. The CGN program assesses dogs on their ability to perform basic exercises as well as their ability to demonstrate good manners in everyday situations. The certificate may benefit you and your pet when applying for rental/ condo accommodation, pets in the workplace or other access.

Cost for the registration and CKC certificate is $20.00. Pre-registration is strongly recommended as the event will be busy.

Citizen Canine is collecting donations to sponsor rescue dog waiting for adoption - demonstrating that great pets are available through rescue, and to increase their adoptability. At least four HugABull dogs will be attempting the test, and for $20 you can sponsor one. Please contact info@hugabull.com if you'd like to help!

New this year is the Citizen Canine Dog Friendly Landlord of the Year Award. Finding pet-friendly rentals is tough, and landlords who keep an open mind deserve kudos. We love to give shout-outs to positive media coverage of pit bulls...and even more so when this coverage recognizes our partners and volunteers!

It starts with an interview of Jacqueline from Aqua Paws Hydrotherapy - a generous lady who loves strong breeds and donates therapy time to shelter dogs. She's a long-time volunteer with the SPCA and has also worked with HugABull foster dogs who needed hydrotherapy after injury. Jacqueline took the ultimate pittie plunge last fall when she adopted a HugABull dog of her own, after falling in love with red-nosed Stevie (pictured above) during a foster stay.

The second part of the Breakfast TV spot shows Kim, the manager of the Vancouver SPCA, giving a short demo on clicker training, using a beautiful and well-mannered pit bull as a demo dog.

Thrown away - Andy needs help

Every dog in the shelter is a tragedy, but we recognize that sometimes owner surrender is unavoidable. When this is the case, the ethical thing to do is bring in the dog and provide any background that will allow shelter staff to make the best decision about adoptability.

Andy's owner didn't do that. He or she didn't even try the typical, cowardly types of surrender that we see: claiming the dog isn't theirs but a stray who wandered into their yard, leaving the dog tied outside an SPCA, leaving their dog with a "FREE" sign, or simply opening the door and letting the dog run until it is picked up by animal control.

Instead, someone put Andy and another dog in a truck, drove into Surrey, and pushed both dogs out of the moving vehicle. Luckily for them, another kind-hearted motorist saw what happened and picked up both bruised and confused dogs, delivering them to the SPCA. That's how we met Andy, a sweet, neglected, senior citizen who need some serious TLC.

Andy's personality couldn't be nicer: he's extra-loving with people, great with other dogs, and he LOVES to play despite his advanced age (approximately 8 or 9 years old).

Andy would do great in just about any home, although at first he'll need some medical attention. This poor battered dog has irritated skin and bald patches that will need to be investigated and treated topically, and through a hypo-allergenic diet. His feet are tender and he needs to lose some weight.

Right now Andy needs a foster so he can get out of the shelter - even if someone can only commit to a week or two. HugABull will cover all expenses related to his medical care, and can provide assistance with transport to and from vet visits, and anything else he may need.

Andy should be enjoying his golden years with his head in someone's lap. Not itchy and sore, in a kennel, literally thrown away by the only person he ever knew. If you know someone who can commit to a short- or longer-term foster for this wonderful dog, please contact hugabull@gmail.com

Breed discrimination is alive and well

Sheba is a sweet, mellow dog with impeccable manners. After her foster care period, several people applied to adopt her and we found the perfect fit: a young couple living in a Vancouver condo building who were excited about her potential to be a breed ambassador. They had plans for therapy dog and Canine Good Neighbour certification. The applicants checked in with their landlord about their plans for adoption and received the green light to bring Sheba home.

Adjusting to condo living was a snap, and Sheba never put a paw out of place. Her new family loved her, but unfortunately the landlord didn't feel the same way. His small dog reacted aggressively on sight of Sheba, and although Sheba never responded, he felt the new dog was to blame.

Soon the landlord came knocking claiming that their pit bull "made neighbours uncomfortable." Again, Sheba had never been rude to anyone or even barked, but the landlord demanded that she be muzzled while in the building.

Wanting to be good neighbours, the owners complied, although Sheba posed no risk to anyone. Days later the landlord was back saying muzzling wasn't enough and he was still getting complaints. He demanded that they get rid of the dog.

Sheba's owners did a great deal of soul-searching and offered to find new housing, but the landlord was inflexible. He wouldn't allow them to keep the dog, but wouldn't allow them to break their lease either.

The owners didn't have the resources to fight and after making phone calls and exploring their options, they felt their hands were tied. Although they had done everything by the book...although they lived in a city with no breed specific legislation...although there was nothing in their rental agreement about pets...and although their dog hadn't once misbehaved...they risked losing their home and/or money in legal fees.

Luckily Sheba's original foster home was still open, and she returned to a familiar environment where she still awaits her forever home. We know it won't take long because she's such an easy, mellow dog - but that doesn't make this blatant discrimination any easier to take.

How can you make sure this doesn't happen to you?
- Read all pet-related bylaws carefully and obey them. Pit bulls are under more scrutiny than other breeds, so never give a neighbour or landlord a reason to complain.

- If you live in a strata or co-op, get involved with the board and ensure you know about any proposed changes to pet laws. Speak out against any breed specific proposals, and educate your neighbours about effective animal control policies. This page is a great start!

- If you are a renter and unfairly targeted because of your dog's breed, contact the Residential Tenancy Office. You can speak to an Information Officer at no cost to find out your rights, and arrange mediation if needed.

- Consider asking your veterinarian, trainer, or other animal professional to provide letters speaking out against breed specific legislation in general, and about the temperament of your dog in particular.

- Contact us! We can arrange for a certified trainer to provide a temperament assessment of your dog, and provide you with information to take to your landlord or strata.

UPDATE - Hope for Gunner!

A big thanks to everyone who Facebooked, Twittered, phoned and emailed their dog-loving friends to help find a foster home for Gunner.

We received a number of responses from people looking to help, and we found a family we think will be a phenomenal match! They are dog-savvy, committed to responsible ownership, and are willing to provide the time and stability Gunner needs after all the recent turmoil in his life.

He'll be moving to his new foster home today, and if things work out his family is open to a foster-to-adopt. We're keeping our fingers and paws crossed that everything works out because Gunner really deserves a stable home (we are always puzzled when fantastic, well-mannered, social dogs like Gunner aren't snapped up right away!)

Thank you again to everyone who spread the word, with a special shout-out to the people at Respect-A-Bull, another BC-based pit bull rescue, who posted about Gunner's situation and even offered to link him up with one of their foster homes. It's wonderful to be reminded that there are so many great people who care about the breed and are helping us help these wonderful dogs, one dog at a time.

A plea for Gunner - a dog who needs a little stability

Gunner is a stellar little dog who has had a string of bad breaks in his life - and he is a perfect example of why human-oriented pitties do poorly without a family. Gunner is severely stressing out and needs a calm and stable foster home for the next couple of weeks so the poor boy can relax...and we can find him the forever home he so desperately deserves.

We pulled Gunner out of the shelter back in Fall 2009. He was so stressed that he was exhibiting compulsive behaviour - spinning and biting his tail - and the shelter staff was becoming concerned. They called us and he aced his temperament assessment: Gunner is lovely and affectionate with people and absolutely ADORES children. He's very friendly with other dogs and can co-exist with a cat.

Gunner went to a wonderful, experienced foster home with three other dogs and a little boy, and thrived. His stress behaviour stopped completely and his foster mom said that if she didn't already have a full pack at home, she would have adopted him for sure.

A month later, Gunner was snapped up by a great family who adored him. Sadly we learned last month that due to a family emergency his owners were unable to keep him, and through no fault of his own Gunner is back in the program.

Because of the sudden return we've been unable to find him a permanent foster home and Gunner has had to move a couple of times. This, combined with the stress of leaving his family, has taken a toll on the poor boy and he's not doing well. He's still a loving and wonderful little man, but he is STRESSED and some of his shelter behaviours are returning.

With his happy personality and cute little eye patch, Gunner is often compared to Petey from the Little Rascals. He's a perfect breed ambassador and a little gentleman, and it's hard for us to see him in such distress.

Please help us help Gunner. If you know someone who can provide a calm, secure environment where he can de-stress for a couple of weeks, we can continue working to find him a home he never has to leave. He has lovely house manners, and he would do just fine in almost any kind of living environment (house, apartment, urban, rural, pets, children, etc) as long as there's not SO much stimulation that he becomes even more stressed.

Since his stress behaviours increase when left alone, it would be ideal to put him in an environment where he isn't routinely on his own for long hours.

What does a pit bull look like?

HugABull opposes breed specific legislation (BSL) for many reasons. It punishes responsible owners - who follow laws and whose dogs don't bite - and not the irresponsible owners, who simply go further underground. It's expensive. There is no hard data to show that it works, whereas there is very promising data to show that dangerous dog legislation DOES work.

But it is the issue of identifying a pit bull that causes the most headache, and as a recent story in Ontario shows, the most heartache. The Bronco family in Brampton, Ontario chose to breed their boxer and bulldog, and found homes for two of the puppies nearby. Two years later, an animal control officer spied one of the dogs in its home, determined it resembled the "pit bull" banned in the province, and seized it.

None of the dogs in question have caused any trouble, shown aggression, or strayed off their property. Based only on the way they look, they have been taken from their family homes and now sit in a shelter. Their owners must decide whether to initiate legal action, see their dogs euthanized, or ship them out of the province for re-homing.

This story would be equally as tragic if the dogs in question were pit bulls, and indeed there are similar seizures happening all over Ontario. This story, however, truly illustrates the arbitrary nature of the "pit bull" label when paperwork, veterinarian testimonials, and parentage isn't enough to return good dogs to good homes.

Our hearts go out to Jersey and Rambo, who sit today in the concrete kennel of the shelter system while their warm beds at home are empty. And let's not forget that while the legal battles wage on, it is taxpayer money that pays for their upkeep, and valuable shelter space that cannot be allotted to a truly homeless animal.

We can only hope that they are able to return home soon, and this provides a little more momentum to the tide of public opinion against BSL.

RIP Demo - a dog that inspired

HugABullers both big and small fell in love with Demo last year, when we discovered Demo: The Story of a Junkyard Dog. Sweet little Demo has the big muscles but not the bad attitude to be a junkyard dog and is abandoned by his misanthropic, junk-spewing owner. He ultimately finds a home with a boy who loves him for the gentle companion he's meant to be, and even manages to be part of the solution to the city's gigantic waste problem. A pit bull hero!

This beautifully-illustrated book manges to link themes of animal rescue, stereotypes and environmentalism in a great little read. It was found under the Christmas trees of many kids in our community last year, and is on the reading list in classrooms frequented by our members.

So it was with great sadness we heard that the real Demo, the dog who inspired it all, passed away recently. However, judging from this blog post by his human, he lived a good, long life with someone who obviously cared a great deal for him. To love and be loved; to inspire a book that changes minds every day; and to live to the ripe old age of 16 sounds like everything a humble little dog could ask for.

RIP Demo. You will not be forgotten.

Athletic Jake seeks soulmate (or foster)

Jake is a very good boy who will be a fabulous addition to an active and structured home. Unfortunately, he's having trouble finding that perfect fit.

He was originally surrendered to the shelter with glowing comments from his original owners, who gave him up after his young caretaker left for college. We tested him and found him to be a bright, energetic friendly boy with a ton of potential, so we accepted him into our program.

From the shelter he went into a foster home, where he displayed some anxious behaviour at first - biting his leash, excitability, and running away with his toys - but quickly showed himself to be a perfect gentleman with the right handling. His foster family considered adopting him, but realized that his training and activity needs were too much for their home. And since we are committed to finding a perfect match, we are still looking!

We need either a foster or adoptive home that is committed to a few more professional training sessions (provided free of charge through HugABull), lots of exercise, and firm but kind leadership. In that sort of environment, where Jake has the structure and certainty he's lacked all his life, he will blossom!

A little more about Jake...

Athletic Jake loves, loves, loves to run - but once he’s had his daily exercise he has a definite "off" switch. Whether on the carpet, on the floor, or upside-down against the mini-bar, this five-year-old spends the majority of his day happily snoozing away.Separation anxiety and destructiveness is not be a problem with this boy.

When outside, Jake will trot along at a good, even clip for many kilometres without breaking a sweat. Jake also loves a game of fetch and some sprinting around a tennis court, yard, or lacrosse box.

Car rides are a big hit, and Jake gets super excited as soon as he lays eyes on the vehicle. Once inside he will either sleep soundly during the trip or make what his foster mom calls happy donkey (braying) noises.

Jake is very interested in other dogs and will often pull or whine to go see them, but he has no problem being around them or hanging around the local pet store. Jake doesn't have a lot of experience interacting directly with other dogs, but is generally curious and friendly. New introductions should be slow, controlled and polite to keep things positive.

Jake needs an experienced handler and a very active lifestyle. He bonds closely with his owner and is a sensitive boy: he will do best with a strong and kind leader who can set up clear ground rules, provide a regular outlet for physical energy, and has a calm and confident demeanour. Jake will respond wonderfully after so much uncertainty in his short life, and be the stellar companion he was meant to be!

2009 dogs in review - MASON

Early in January 2009, Vancouver Animal Control alerted us to a sick senior AmStaff who had been seized. He was in bad shape, with a scabbed and puffy face - so swollen he could barely see. He was also mostly deaf, but if he smelled or sensed a person around he'd approach without hesitation, wagging and smiling.

Poor Mason was an itchy mess. His face was the worst problem, but the bald, scaly patches covered his entire body and he scratched constantly. No one knew if it was mange, infection, or something worse, but HugABull director Shelagh knew he needed out of the shelter ASAP. She took him home and started him on a regimen of testing, medication and an allergy-controlled diet - treatments that wouldn't be available at the shelter, but made possible in foster care through the Lovely Fund.

Mason's skin problems turned out to be allergies run amok, and after a few weeks of treatments he was recognizable as a dog once more. His sweet, mellow and loving personality never changed. Mason has an easy smile and wag for humans and dogs alike, and is so dog-social that Shelagh often uses him for shelter dog assessments and socialization training with reactive dogs.

At 9-10 years of age with health problems, Mason is going to be a long-term compassion foster through Shelagh and HugABull. With his puffy little face and soft temperament, he has become somewhat of a HugABull mascot. He's also an example of a dog that has every strike against him: he's a senior, he's dark in colour and not traditionally attractive, and he has health problems. He'd have very low adoption potential in a shelter, but is one of the sweetest, most affectionate, and easygoing companions one could ask for.

2009 dogs in review - CHICA

This brindled girl is one of the most colourful dogs in our program, with full-colour, human grade tattoos adorning the insides of her ears and her belly. The SPCA staff had never seen anything like it when she first came into the Maple Ridge shelter in late 2008 with a litter of puppies. She was assessed by HugABull but before a foster home could be arranged, she was reclaimed by her owner (who showed a veterinarian's letter claiming she'd been sedated for the tattoos).

Chica popped up again in March 2009 at the Vancouver SPCA, this time with a dislocated hip from a car accident. Following invasive surgery, she needed a foster home where she could heal in peace. HugABull found her one, and she never left.

Foster mom April is now a HugABull director, and Chica is a true ambassadog. She earned her CGN in the summer of 2009, an impressive feat considering that she only knew one command (sit!) when she came into foster care. She participates in all HugABull events, and has graduated from Pit Ed, Intermediate Obedience and Rally-O! She was even featured in this Vancouver Courier article about foster care and adoption.

Some positive change in Delta?

Three HugABull directors along with a representative from No Muzzle attended a public hearing in Delta last night around their Animal Control Bylaws.

Delta City Council is reviewing a proposed bylaw that among other things will increase animal licensing and fines, and expand the rights of Animal Control Officers to intervene in cases of dog aggression, animal mistreatment and abuse.

Unfortunately, what hasn't changed in the proposed bylaw is the definition of a pit bull as an "Aggressive Dog" by virtue of its breed. Pit bulls in Delta are required to be muzzled and are subject to licensing fees that are five times higher than those for other dogs.

Last night we spoke to council, requesting that the pit bull clause be removed from the bylaw, while retaining penalties for irresponsible ownership and aggressive dog behaviours. Three Delta citizens were in attendance and also spoke out against categorizing all pit bulls as aggressive.

Interestingly, it was revealed that due to the many restrictions around pit bulls, and because there is no conclusive way to identify one at the time of licensing, many pit bull owners are registering their dogs as other breeds. There are only 39 registered pit bulls in Delta, while any degree of observation would make it clear that the actual number is many, many times that.

We salute the Mayor and Council of Delta for inviting public input into this issue and revisiting a clause that does so much more harm than good. We look forward to hearing about the new bylaw in early 2010!

2009 dogs in review - JJ (now SUGAR)

Some of you may remember a passionate plea on behalf of JJ in September. This vivacious girl passed her temperament evaluation with flying colours but at the time we had no foster homes available. Unfortunately the shelter was running out of space and JJ was facing the awful fate of many "less adoptable" animals in a crowded shelter system. Despite her stunning looks and friendly personality, she was being overlooked by potential adopters and faced euthanasia.

HugABull director Lauren couldn't let that happen, even if it meant boarding JJ at a kennel until a foster home could be found. Fortunately a great couple heard our plea for foster care and came forward with an offer to help.

When the couple met this sweet little thing, everyone felt the instant connection. There was talk of adoption even before JJ was in the car. Sure enough, the papers were signed the minute JJ's foster period was up. This girl now goes by the name Sugar as a tribute to her sweet nature.

"Sugar has wiggled her little bum right into our hearts," said the new mom. "She is such a gem - we feel really lucky to have her."

2009 dogs in review - GABE

As the year comes to a close, we thought it was good time to reflect on the dozens of dogs we've rescued and re-homed this year. Check out this year's calendar for 12 wonderful stories, and we'll be posting new ones here over the next few weeks.

Gabe

Handsome and dignified Gabriel was a fixture on our Adoptables page for close to a year. He came to HugABull in late 2008 in a sorry state: for the first 5-6 years of his life, Gabe had been kenneled with younger, unneutered males who beat up on him constantly.

Gabe limped into the Victoria Pound covered with scars, wounds, and suffering from numerous other health problems, including a botched ear-crop job that left him with little more than two holes in the side of his head. But those big soulful eyes caught the heart of Danielle, a HugABull director at the time, and she was determined to give him the caring, stress-free forever home he deserved. She found him a space with one of our most experienced foster homes where he settled right in with his gentle, elderly foster sisters Sunny and Nutmeg.

Many people fell in love with Gabe, and applications came pouring in, but there was never quite the right fit. He is a loving and sensitive boy who wouldn't have done well in busy, noisy or unstructured environments, with cats, or with a pushy dog sibling.

As time went on, it became clear that he was extremely happy and comfortable where he was. So in Fall 2009, Danielle asked Gabe' s foster family if they would consider adopting him. They hesitated only because adopting a third dog meant that they could no longer foster. But in the end they decided Gabe was worth it, and the papers were signed a few months ago.

Gabe's parents send us frequent updates and bring him on walks with other HugABull dogs. He continues to do wonderfully and his parents couldn't imagine life without him. Neighbours have become accustomed to the sight of that giant head at the front window, waiting patiently during the day for his parents to come home. He trails his parents around the house, accompanies them on trips to Home Depot, and adores his sisters.

You can imagine how sad last week was when big sister Sunny passed away. Although the entire family is grieving, Gabe's parents say that having him in their home has been a blessing and all of them - especially Nutmeg - take so much comfort in having this special boy in their lives.

Gabe did not have an easy path to his forever home, but thanks to Danielle, his foster family, and all the others that believed in him, he finally has the life he deserves. While we send our condolences for Sunny's loss, we are comforted to know that Gabe's sweet and sensitive heart will help with the healing process.

HugABull Open House

A big thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday for our first Open House at Dizine Canine Training Centre. The weather was a little dicey, but many of you braved the snow and cold to celebrate with us, and indulge in holiday photos with your four-legged family members.

It was wonderful to see past adopters, volunteers, and other community members mingling with new fosters and potential adopters. Playing a special role as breed ambassador was Hero (now Reese), a pit/mastiff mix currently in foster care with HugABull director Arlene. While we distributed hot chocolate and cookies, he distributed snuggles and kisses for an entire four-hour shift. He won over many hearts, and we'll be surprised if we don't see an adoption application or two following his appearance!

Special acknowledgements to Off Leash Pet Photography who donated their services for the day, with proceeds from photo sales benefitting HugABull. In addition to all the fun we had, we also raised nearly $500 for more dog rescue and fabulous events in 2010!

Motley's been flooded out! - UPDATE

One of our supporters on Vancouver Island agreed to foster Motley over the holidays. She moved to her new home last week and settled in without a hitch. Her new foster mom has already been seduced by her charms, calling her "adorable but cheeky!" Motley is still available for adoption and her full profile can be viewed on our Adoptables page.

Motley was pulled from the Surrey shelter over a month ago and has been doing wonderfully in her foster home. But after last week's rainstorms, foster mom Jen came home to find Motley standing petrified in a six-inch pool of water that had filled her crate!

The apartment was flooded, and Jen needs to vacate for about a month while the landlord repairs her home. Jen's temporary home is in an apartment building that doesn't allow dogs, so we need a new foster for Motley, fast!

Motley is a fabulous dog with a permanent smile, a huge desire to please, and a mischevious side that keeps her foster family in stitches. She's one of the smartest dogs we've ever worked with, and has been known to learn tricks in a day.

Because she's so smart, she will test the limits (especially when it comes to sneaking on the couch or nabbing food!), so she needs an experienced foster home who will provide structure and ensure she follows the rules.

Motley is dog-social, but gets SO excited around other dogs that she can forget her manners. She has made huge strides in Pit Ed, but again needs a strong handler to keep her focused and behaved.

This little minx would be suitable for a home with another dog - especially if the other dog was a mellower type that would put up with her puppyish antics. No cats though! She is much too interested in them.

Motley's a fabulous dog who loves people, loves playing ball, and soaks up attention. She's crate-trained, house-trained, and well-mannered in the house.

If you have handling experience and no cats, Motley would be an enormously fun addition to your home! She's up for adoption and has applications coming in, so her foster period may be anywhere from 1-4 weeks.

HugABull has been re-homed!

HugABull has always been run by volunteers, and since 2004 our head office has been the living rooms, home offices, and laptops of our directors. But with the opening of Dizine Canine Training Centre (DCTC) in Vancouver, HugABull finally has a home.

Shelagh Begg is the owner of DCTC and a long-time director of HugABull, When she opened her new space last month, she offered to provide office space, storage and space for HugABull operations. It will be a welcoming (and rain-proof) site for Pit-Ed classes, and we're looking forward to hosting information sessions, adoption days and so much more.

We're celebrating our new home on December 13 with a holiday open house. Join us to see visit the centre, visit with other HugABullers, and have Christmas photos taken with your canine family members. Off-Leash Photography will be lending their amazing photography talents in exchange for donations to HugABull.

Come by with your leashed, well-behaved dogs for fun, celebration, and a tour of the new space we're proud to call home. We're also collecting cash, new and gently used donations for Loki's Christmas Wish Fund, so clean out your closets before you come!

UPDATE - Kane found a saviour!

In almost every way, Kane is the perfect dog. He is social with dogs, cats, birds and farm animals. Crate-trained, obedience-trained, easy-going in the house and spectacular with children, he has charmed every family he’s lived with. However, Kane is having trouble finding a forever home because of some challenges that came up during his foster period.

Although he originally came from a wonderful family home, we don’t think he had a lot of socialization with other dogs. He’s friendly but gets extremely excited when he sees another dog and isn’t able to greet it. He loses his focus, strains on his leash, and his normally impeccable manners fall by the wayside. Kane has been attending Pit-Ed and we’ve been seeing progress, but his foster family lives in a very busy area swarming with other dogs and it’s just too much stimulation for him.

Kane's foster family loves him and considered keeping him, but he needs more structure and training than this busy family with young children can provide. This means Kane is looking for a new foster home. We already have a shortage of foster spaces, and sadly we don’t have any current homes who can give Kane the structure he needs. HugABull is willing to provide free one-on-one training, Pit Ed classes and lots of support as we know that with a month or two of “boot camp” he would come a long way.

We are looking for a two-month commitment and a solid routine with opportunities for Kane to practice calm behaviour around new dogs. It will require some dedication and handling skills, but we can tell you that Kane will be a perfect houseguest in every other way.

Someone called me a pit bull...and sealed my fate in Ontario.

Most of us know that Ontario is home to the most restrictive Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in North America. A dog deemed to be a "pit bull type" cannot be adopted or imported into the province. It means that countless innocent dogs have been put to death and people have seen their gentle family dogs seized and subject to restrictive muzzling laws.

Despite the death, heartbreak and millions of dollars in legal fees, there has been no evidence of fewer dog bites in Ontario or increased public safety. And with each month that goes by, it becomes more clear that BSL is fundamentally flawed.

Someone posted these puppies for sale online calling them "pit bull mixes" and sealed their fate. The mother dog (a Lab/Shepherd cross) and her litter were seized by Animal Control and her puppies sit on death row.

Was the father a pit bull? We don't know for sure. He may have been a mastiff, a boxer, or another Lab. But because a backyard breeder decided to type the dreaded "P-word" these otherwise highly adoptable puppies may die.

These puppies drew the attention of MonStars Mastiff Rescue, who is desperately looking for a way to have them transported out of the province, where they can be adopted and undergo a breed identification from a professional. Ironically, an organization like HugABull would normally not accept these puppies because they appear to have minimal or no pit bull in them!

Although HugABull cannot take puppies at this time, a local all-breed rescue, The Penny Foundation, has stepped up and offered foster care to the eight little ones. Now we wait to see if the red tape can be unravelled and if these dogs can be released out of the province - and survive. As healthy, social, cute-as-a-button puppies they will have no trouble finding homes in Vancouver. But in Ontario they may die, because one person at one time uttered "pit bull."

Please send your thoughts and wishes to these little guys, and remember that these are just one litter of many slated for death row because of BSL. Share this story with your friends, and help us open eyes to why we are so passionate about ending discriminatory legislation.

HugABull is organizing Vancouver's first Pit Bull Awareness Day Walk with a Halloween theme. We welcome all breeds and all people with crowd manners to help us show off our pit bulls as the well-behaved, fun-loving family members they are.

We'll be dispensing special treats along the way to put extra emphasis on the sweet side of pit bulls.

Thanks to our many friends and fans, our Giggle Dam fundraiser was another success. We had a great turnout of 118 people, and our preliminary calculations indicate that over $3,000 was raised. These funds will directly benefit our rescue and advocacy activities over the coming year.

It was a fun night, made especially memorable by seeing certain HugABullers on-stage in costume...in addition to being dog advocates, they're also very good sports.

Emergency Foster - UPDATE!

We are pleased to report that, once again, the HugABull community came through for a dog in need. One of our members and her dog pack of three volunteered to provide JJ with a home while we searched for a longer-term arrangement. During this time she was rechristened as "Paige" and indulged in a serious case of puppy love with Seven, her baby Visla foster brother.

Paige will be moving to a foster-to-adopt family in the next week or two, and we have a great feeling about this match (although little Seven will be disappointed to see her go...). Thank you to everyone who helped spread the word, volunteered their time and homes, and ultimately saved this little girl's life.

A pocket sized pit bull needs your help!

We met JJ at a local shelter last weekend and knew she was born to be a HugABull dog. Unfortunately due to a shortage of foster homes we couldn’t take her right away, and with every day that went by JJ became more stressed. The shelter was squeezed for space, and told us that she had to go NOW or a difficult decision would have to be made.

Lauren, our foster care coordinator, couldn’t let anything happen to this stellar dog. She called Country Squire Kennels, who agreed to look after her at a reduced rate until we could find a foster home.This move will save JJ’s life, but it’s still not the best environment for her – this cuddly, kissy girl needs to be surrounded by a family and lots of love.

JJ is a tiny thing who weighs only about 40 pounds and barely reaches your knee. She is about 1.5 years old with an immensely sweet, outgoing personality. She will let you get away with anything as long as she’s getting some human attention! She loves to play but never forgets her manners: she will stop and sit nicely when you ask for her toy.

Her doggie social skills are hard to gauge due to kennel stress and a recent heat (she was just spayed) but she has no problem meeting other dogs, especially males. She may be somewhat selective with females but doesn’t have any reactivity in their presence. A cat-free home would be best as this girl does love to chase.

JJ needs a foster home as soon as possible so she can de-stress and blossom into the loving family dog she was meant to be. Please contact lauren@hugabull.com if you have room in your home for this girl (she doesn’t take up much space!) even if it’s only short-term.

BSL in Nanaimo - UPDATE

We have been in touch with Nanaimo City Council and they have reassured us that there are no plans to change BSL in Nanaimo or implement a breed ban.

It appears that discussions about breed bans have been fueled by a few vocal citizens and some recent op-ed letters in local newspapers. We remain concerned, especially given the mayor and councillor's public support of Ontario's breed ban, but fortunately Nanaimo's pit bulls remain safe for now.

We encourage you to support the Nanaimo Kennel Club's upcoming events in support of Responsible Dog Owner's Week. Nanaimo is already a city with stringent BSL, so we invite responsible pit bull owners to make themselves visible and be part of the responsible dog owner community!

The Pit Bull attack that wasn't?

It seems that now Pit Bulls don't actually have to do anything to make the news. The most recent media coverage is about a Pit Bull Attack that wasn't? This one has us scratching our heads.

Dog Attack Incomplete

According to news reports a man got out of his car in his driveway and was approached and barked at by two Pit Bulls. The man then got back into his car and dialed 911. Animal Control and the Police attended the scene and removed the dogs, but not before the news stations captured animal control officers petting the relaxed and happy dogs on the head, who both had HUGE bully grins slapped across their faces, not to mention the owner who showed up to apologize profusely.

While we at HugABull absolutely do not believe that dogs of any breed should be at large we also have to wonder why this story made the news and does this mean that we can now call 911 and have animal control show up every time our neighbours Labrador is seen wondering lose while barking at us? Of course not, that would be silly.

Lets get real... this must have been a very slow news day.

Bring your polite, leashed dog for an afternoon of visiting, food and fun following the SPCA's Paws for a Cause walk. Two-legged friends and family are welcome (we recommend they be polite too, but we'll make an exception to the leash rules).

By now many of you have already heard about Ontario's former Attorney General and his run in with the law. Michael Bryant was arrested for allegedly dragging a man to his death with his car.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the victim, and we hope this gets people thinking about public safety and the importance of personal responsibility. We are all individually responsible for our actions, whether behind the wheel of a car or at the end of a leash.

HugABull is pleased to introduce three new steering committee members. While they have all been working with HugABull for quite a few months now, we thought it was high time we provided an official introduction and welcome.

Lauren steps into HugABull as our NEW Foster Care Coordinator – a position we know we’ve needed for some time. Lauren’s involvement with HugABull started two years ago when she adopted her first pit bull, the late but lovely Rex. Right away Lauren got involved conducting home checks, meet and greets and raising funds for Loki’s Christmas Wish Fund and the Lovely Fund. Today Lauren is the proud mom to Rex’s beloved foster brother and HugABull favourite, Bronte!

As Foster Care coordinator, Lauren will help organize our fostering process and be a point of contact for information and advice. Please contact her with any fostering-related inquiries at

Danielle K recently joined HugABull as our NEW Volunteer Coordinator. A proud pit bull owner to her wonderful dog Casey, Danielle wanted to get involved and help the breed she loved so much – but as a nurse with a variable schedule it was difficult to commit to a role. As a volunteer coordinator she can work from home keeping our volunteer list up-to-date and making sure our events and programs have the people resources they need to be successful.

April stumbled across HugABull when she contacted Shelagh for training advice when a shelter adoption went wrong. April will be spearheading our media relations efforts, editing our newsletter, and lending her writing, marketing, and communications skills wherever she can.

Loki's Christmas Wish 2009

We are at it again.. last years event was such a huge success we had to keep it going and this year we want to make it bigger and better than the year before.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this event, here is a little background.

Loki’s Christmas Wish Foundation was named after one of HugABull’s own. Loki was a 5 month old pup that came to HugABull from Chilliwack Animal Control. Surrendered by his previous owners Loki had been neglected and his future was uncertain.Luckily for him the team saw something in him, the determination to trust and be loved.

Just days after Christmas Loki found his forever home in the arms of a loving family whose life was forever changed. Unfortunately only 3 short years later Loki was laid to rest due to health issues. From Loki’s passing came this wish from his family. “Let no dog at Christmas time go unloved or unwanted”With that wish, each year in memory of Loki, HugABull will be collecting donations of dog beds, toys, treats, jackets, food and anything else that could give a dog something to bark about.

This year we will be collecting for New Westminster Animal Control and the Victoria CRD Pound. Two very deserving groups working hard with what they have.

While we guessed that talent would take weight over moral or ethical values we are still saddened that any team in the NFL would take him on.

Ginger is a gorgeous little girl from Surrey SPCA, and in true pit bull fashion she drenched Global TV anchor Randene Neill with kisses during a recent Adopt-A-Pet segment.

We dare you to watch this and not fall in love with this sweet dog! Apparently Global viewers did, and phones are ringing off the hook with adoption offers.

Kudos to Ginger for being her loveable bullie self, to SPCA Surrey for promoting our favourite breed on a high-profile TV show, and to Global TV for putting a true, wiggle-bum pit bull in the media spotlight. Well done!

Being a responsible dog owner requires a lot of things: patience, kindness, commitment...and sometimes money. Many of us know first-hand that when your dog gets very sick, very fast, this translates to massive vet bills.

But what do you do when the vet bill comes and you're already struggling financially? This is what Chad, a single dad from Maple Ridge, recently had to ask himself.

Earlier this year, Chad adopted Hemi as a companion to his two girls. The four of them bonded immediately and soon, no one could imagine life without her – especially Chad’s daughter, who lives with a bone growth deficiency that inhibits her development. Hemi is her best friend, playmate and personal therapy dog!

Two months ago, Chad lost his job. It wasn't an easy time but Chad has been making it work…until disaster struck two weeks ago when Hemi became very sick. Worried and not wanting to waste any time, Chad rushed his pet to the nearest Animal Hospital, where Hemi had emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage.

Chad didn’t hesitate to okay the surgery and save his dog, but when the dust settled he was faced with a bill for almost $2000. On an already limited income this was a shock, especially when the Animal Hospital refused to extend a payment plan to him. And they wouldn't release Hemi until the bill was paid…so every day that Hemi remained at the hospital, they charged an extra $55 for boarding fees!

Overwhelmed but determined, Chad kicked into overdrive. He drained his savings, and gathered his friends to organize fundraisers – pub nights, BBQ Hot dog & Burger sales at his house and email campaigns. When he came to HugABull we knew we needed to help. So many dogs are surrendered because their owners are unable or unwilling to provide basic vet care for their pets, and Chad has truly inspired us with his love and commitment to Hemi.

HugABull has been working with Chad and the vet’s office, and has committed to help him fundraise. With our support the vet’s office has agreed to release Hemi and a payment plan has been set up.

We ask our forum members to consider donating in support of Chad, someone who doesn’t like having to ask for money, but will do anything for his beloved pet. HugABull will be collecting donations through our Paypal account – just enter your donation and include “Hemi” on the donation form.

Any and all funds will go straight to Hemi’s medical bills. There is $453.00 currently owing, and Chad hopes to raise some of that at a car wash fundraiser this weekend. Any extra funds raised will go towards Hemi’s spay, and then to HugABull.

Help us help Hemi! Every $5 or $10 donation makes a difference...and helps Hemi recover at home with her family, where she belongs.

The Vancouver Pride Parade is a huge annual highlight for HugABull. Braving the August heat, we gather with our best Ambassadogs and committed human volunteers to show off the true nature of our happy, well-behaved (and well-dressed) pit bulls.

We celebrate this important, fun and colourful event, but at the same time we make an important statement. Discrimination is everywhere, and despite many advances in society, there are still people being judged on how they look or what other people perceive them to be.

This happens among us in the two-legged world, and it extends to animals too. We all deserve to be judged as individuals and to be proud of who we are, no matter what gender, age, sexual orientation, species...or breed!

Dayton from Vancouver Island won us all over with his friendly personality and huge grin.

Muay Thai, an agility dog always light on her feet, came as a girlie ballerina.

Walter's smile is almost as big as he is!

Lily showed that even senior citizens can enjoy some rainbow-themed fun, complete with fairy wings.

While June, looking sweet in pink gingham, proved that you are never too young for pride.

Edward is only one month out of the shelter, but already an expert at working the crowds.

Hunter won the costume contest with his Bob-the-builder outfit.

Maggie is the world's most focused Playboy bunny.

Even Jake, the photographer's dog, found some time to make new friends.

It was a long, hot walk, and by the end some dogs were starting to tire. Little Merlot's mom can carry him now...but something tells me she may have a harder time next year when he's all grown up!

Chica enjoys the frozen bandannas and gel collars that awaited the crew at the end of our march.

A new batch of Good Neighbours!

Thirteen dogs joined us on Sunday, July 19 to take the Canine Good Neighbour (CGN) test, a Canadian Kennel Club assessment program that evaluates self-control, good handling, and canine etiquette.

We were proud to see seven HugABull dogs walk away with the CGN title. For Bronte, in particular, this was a proud achievement.

As you can tell from his huge grin, Bronte is a happy, sweet boy who has captured many hearts. Since 2004, he was adopted and surrendered a number of times, through no fault of his own. Lifestyle changes, breakups, illness - Bronte just couldn't get a break, or a family that could keep him through thick and thin.

All this turmoil paid a price. Although Bronte is whip-smart and eager to please, his time in the shelter and as a yard dog made him increasingly anxious. This came to a head when one of his owners let him loose in an off-leash dog park. He got into a fight, and although he caused no damage he was labelled a "dangerous dog" in Victoria.

After he was surrendered in 2008 (a family illness), he was fostered by Lauren, Luke and their dog Rex. Rex and Bronte bonded closely and were inseparable until Rex passed away two months ago. In their grief, Lauren and Luke decided that the best way to pay tribute to Rex was to give his best friend a forever home, and the adoption was made official just a few weeks ago.

Lauren and Bronte attend Rally-O and obedience classes, and Bronte is thriving. When he passed his CGN test on Sunday, the crowd broke into wild applause, and even a few tears.

From "dangerous dog" to certified Good Neighbour: a testament to the potential of this breed, and the power of responsible ownership!

Another CGN (and HugABull alum) is Moonpie, a completely deaf, rescued pit bull who aced the evaluation by following hand signals. She's an amazing example of the potential of dogs with disabilities.

Other HugABull CGNs include Koda (with Kristen), Granger and Fletcher (with Ashley), Chica (with April) and Jake (with Eric). Congratulations all! You are all examples of responsible ownership, expert handling, and the potential of this breed.

Patriotic Pit Bulls

HugABullers and dogs were proud to participate in this year's 2009 Canada Day parade through downtown Vancouver.

Hunter (formerly Rio), newly matched with his forever family through HugABull, dressed for the occasion and marched with a big bullie smile.

HugABull foster dog Edward came out with us wearing an "Adopt Me" vest, which drew a lot of attention and inquiries. He was a bit overwhelmed by all the activity, but behaved beautifully. He'll be a pro Ambassadog some day.

Having you and your dog obtain your CGN certification is a huge achievement, and tells your community that you're serious about responsible ownership.

Let's Rally for Gabe

Mellow Gabe has been in foster care for eight months and is ready for his forever family. Help us spread the word about this sweet guy and find him the permanent home he deserves.

To meet Gabe is to love him: he's gentle and loving with everyone he meets. He has wonderful house manners and is a laid-back companion. No crazy puppy energy here, although he LOVES to play with his ball and his Kong!

Gabe is about eight years old and in good health, but he didn't come to us that way. His first owner kept him in a pen with two younger, bigger dogs who continually picked on him and inflicted nasty wounds on his face and body. He has one of the worst ear-crop jobs we've ever seen, leaving his ear canal completely exposed.

Other than his physical scars and a little uneasiness around new dogs, you'd never know that Gabe came from a rough background. He's a giant, cuddly marshmallow of a dog who loves to be tucked in at night with his blankie.

We're not sure why it's taken Gabe so long to find a home. He'd be a wonderful addition to a family, and would be a fabulous companion for kids. He does well with other polite, socialized dogs as long as introductions are made slowly, so a home with an existing dog shouldn't be a problem. But cats will be...felines are the only thing Gabe doesn't get along with.

Supreme Court will not hear appeal of Ontario's pit bull ban

The Supreme Court of Canada said Thursday it will not hear a bid to quash Ontario's ban on pit bulls.

The attempt to take the fight to Canada's highest court was launched in April by a
Toronto dog owner represented by lawyer Clayton Ruby. "That's the end of the
legal attack, but it remains a bad law, a terrible law," Ruby said in an
interview.
In his submission to the Supreme Court, Ruby argued there is no
scientific or statistical basis to conclude that pit bulls are more dangerous
than other dogs. He asked the Supreme Court to review a decision from
Ontario's Appeal Court last October that upholds the province's ban.

The high court decided Thursday that it would not hear the appeal.
The Ontario Appeal Court concluded that pit bulls are dangerous and unpredictable dogs that have the potential to attack without warning.The Ontario government enacted the Dog Owners' Liability Act in 2005 to ban the breeding, sale and ownership of pit bulls after several incidents in which the dogs attacked people.

When the law was enacted, pit bulls that were already pets in the province were grandfathered and allowed to stay with owners, but with strict rules.
As a result, many owners have opted to give up their dogs and the animals are ultimately euthanized, Ruby said."The dogs are winding up in the shelters, the shelters can't keep the dogs forever and they kill them," he said.
The challenge was launched on behalf of Ruby's client, Catherine Cochrane.

The Supreme Court also ordered the woman to pay the costs associated with her application to take the case to the high court.

Gentle Tiger wins Animal Courage Award

Tiger is an exceptional example of a pit bull’s resiliency and capacity for love, and we were proud to see him win the BC SPCA Animal Courage Award on May 29.

Last summer in the community of Trail, Tiger was doused with gasoline and set on fire, suffering severe burns on 30% of his body including his face, nose, legs and ear. The local SPCA rushed to the scene and provided emergency treatment to a dog in unthinkable pain. He was then transferred to Vancouver for months of recovery, including the amputation of his badly damaged right ear and treatment for open wounds.

Throughout a difficult recovery, everyone who met Tiger was won over by his sweet and gentle nature. By September the SPCA determined he was ready for a forever home, but they knew it had to be the right one. They turned to HugABull, whose screening processes and support could ensure that Tiger was matched with a family that would care for his physical and emotional scars.

That family was Monica and Tom Bodie of Victoria. At the time, they were mourning the death of their 12-year-old pit bull, Pluto, whom they’d also rescued from an abusive former guardian. Monica and Tom thought that taking care of Tiger would be a wonderful way to fill their house with love once again, and honour Pluto’s memory.

Tiger’s injuries have healed and with his new loving parents, he has a new lease on life. “We are so impressed with his gentle and sweet disposition,” says Tom, “especially given how abused he was. We think he is absolutely stunning, scars and all.” Monica, Tom, and HugABull director Kristen attended the SPCA ceremony where Tiger shared dinner at the table, received his award on stage, and made friends with everyone in attendance. Congratulations Tiger, Tom and Monica!

This is a little late, but again better late than never.

Last month HugABull was invited to attend the Richmond Animal Protection Society's Bully Breed Awareness Day.

It was a GREAT event, good turn out and I think we reached a few people.

Richmond is a municipality with some very strict BSL and unlike some municipalities with BSL Richmond does enforce it and will hand out $1000 tickets for anyone who is caught walking their bully without a muzzle. Let hope that together with RAPS we can change this.

Thank you to the crew at RAPS for inviting us, we had a great time and met some wonderful new friends. Here are some pictures from that great day.

Hurray For Jane!!!

It took a while for Sweet Jane to find her forever home but like the saying goes, "All good things come to those who wait" and boy did we all wait. We just knew this amazing little dog would get her dream home, problem was we just didn't know when.

Jane entered our program back in 2006, she joined us from Washington DC, after she was abandoned with a couple of her pups. Once the pups were placed the Washington Shelter didn't know what to do with Jane, they were getting no interest in her and with more adoptable dogs lining the kennels Jane's time they thought could be numbered. They decided to contact HugABull to see if we might be of some help.

Once Jane was in our program it didn't take long for her to get noticed by a young family. They fell in love and Jane went to her new home, all was sun shine and roses until January of 2008, when we got an email informing us that the family was moving and could not take Jane with them. Poor Jane was once again looking for a home.

The second time around Jane was going to have to wait.

Jane was placed in foster care where her foster dad worked very hard with her on manners both in and out of the house. Jane weighed no more than 40 pounds, a pocket pit with her weight in love for people, but not so much other dogs. Because of Jane's issues with other dogs, we knew the city was not going to be a place where Jane would be happy, she needed to be where she could be alone with just her family and guests, but in the meantime lots of practice out and about in the big city was good for Jane.

A year and 4 months later, Jane was still in foster care, then came Wendy! A manager of a large horse breeding organization with a 100 achers out in the Valley. Jane and Wendy met, walked, ran, met the horses and all the while we held our breath, praying please be the one!

less then a month later.... a couple updates from Jane's mom.

Hi, Jane has been off leash for 3 days now and keeps closer and closer to me. She runs so hard she is cutting the grass. Unfortunately she has learned the joy of sliding through nice soft horse pies from them being on grass.So now we go for our walk and stop at the barn in the wash rack and have a bath.She smelt so bad I could smell her from 10 feet away.She was excellent for her bath and lots of hot water and soap took care of the problem.Tonight she didn't even bother going in with the horses.We have a shed up top that has a lot of rats so tomorrow we are heading there as I'm sure she will help with the problem.She is the best dog I could of ever adopted.Thankyou so much again

Tonight was a great night.Normally I don't let Jane off leash till we are out across the bridge but today when we came back she came all the way home off leash.I told her to keep close when we came across the bridge and she stuck right by my left heel.Do you think she had learned a lot more in another life.If I stopped she would sit down beside me.It was unbelievable.She is so smart.Someone at some point must of taught her to heal.If you had seen her you would of been so proud.I was.When we are out back by the horses I tell her to lay down and stay and then I will walk off about a 100 yards and then call her.She does it perfect every time even if she is laying by the fence and horses come up to her.She is getting better all the time.Thankyou again for all the trouble you went to getting us together.Hope to have pictures soon.

Thank you to Wendy who opened her heart and home to this sweet, loving but sadly overlooked young lady. We know that for the rest of Jane's days she is going to running free, happy and safe and that is all we could have ever wanted for our Sweet Jane.

Surrey's dog bylaw to get more teeth

Karen Lau, who has acted on Surrey's dog bylaw advisory committee for about 12 years, said tighter restrictions for dog owners are on the way.

Surrey's dog bylaw is about to get a lot stricter and expensive for pet owners with aggressive animals. But the new legislation will not be breed specific, despite the public call for a ban on pit bulls.

The demand for a ban comes after a three-year-old boy was seriously attacked by a pit bull Friday afternoon in a home hear 103 Avenue and 133 Street . The dog, normally kept on a chain outside, was mistakenly brought inside. It suddenly turned on Justice Paradis, biting the toddler's face several times. The child was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.

Family members said the boy's facial injuries were severe but he was expected to recover.

The boy's father told CTV News he blames himself for not being more watchful. "I should have known better," DeJal-Blue Paradis said. "I should not have let my son out of my range." The boy's grandfather, Bill Paradis, said the dog, named Haze, belongs to the boy's mother and hasn't attacked anyone before.

Haze is usually kept on a chain outside the family home near 103 Avenue and 133 Street in Surrey. When the boy's father allowed the dog inside the house, Haze attacked, biting the son, then the father when he tried to rescue his child. "[The dog] grabbed him on the face and whipped him down," DeJal-Blue Paradis said, adding that his son suffered a hole in his cheek.
The family is now expected to have the dog euthanized.The boy was taken to emergency and is now at home and expected to recover from his injuries.

Karen Lau, who has acted on Surrey's dog bylaw advisory committee for about 12 years, said the call for breed bans in such instances is understandable, but ill-informed. The committee worked for two years to fully develop the city's "Dog Responsibility Bylaw," which puts the blame for an attack at the feet of the dog owner. The bylaw was given final reading in March of 2000.
Several months ago, Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts asked the committee to revisit the bylaw to see if there was any way of strengthening it.

The advisory committee has just finished a draft to make the dog bylaw a lot tougher, Lau said, declining to be specific before council sees it. Lau noted fines will be higher and restrictions will be tightened. But she remains dead against making legislation breed specific."Most people don't understand, the breed is general, they're just dogs," Lau said Monday. "But the person at the end of that leash that raises that animal, they are all different."

She believes dogs other than pit bulls attack with similar frequency, but the media

sensationalizes it when there's a pit bull involved."Unfortunately, when it's a pit bull, or pit-bull type dog, it gets more publicity," Lau said. "What I'm trying to say is other dogs bite too, but you don't hear about it as much."

Watts said Monday she looks forward to seeing the bylaw, and notes she generally opposes breed bans because they take the onus off the owner.
Watts said educational resources are available in the city for people looking to raise happy, non-aggressive dogs.

It is time to ban this breed?

There is no doubt there are many wonderful pit bulls in the world. People familiar with the breed often talk about how social they are, that they love to play, and that they make great family pets.

Unfortunately, pit bulls have three strikes against them:

1.When they bite, they don't easily let go and the damage to their victim is almost always severe.
2. They scare the hell out of people. Yellow Lab walks down the street with its owner and people smile. Pit bull walks down the street with its owner and people cross the street.
3. They don't attract quality owners. That's not to say all pit bull owners are questionable pet owners, just that an inordinate number of questionable pet owners are attracted to pit bulls.
On Friday, a pit bull savagely attacked a three-year- old in Surrey. No doubt the family is devastated by the incident. The father of the injured boy has accepted responsibility for not keeping a better eye on his son."I can't say it's the dog's fault," the dad told Global TV.

However, in the end, it was the dog that did the biting and it was the dog that was euthanized.
There is no doubt there are many wonderful pit bulls in the world, but the time has come for jurisdictions like British Columbia to ban ownership of this breed for the safety of all.

NO it is not time to "ban this breed" it is time to stand up and hold the irresponsible OWNERS accountable for thier failer to house, train and socialize their dogs. Banning a breed doesn't do anything but make the public FEEL safe, do you actually think that people who cant even follow a simple leash law are going to be able to follow a breed ban or the rules that would be implimented with BSL legislation.

WAKE UP, if only all provinces would follow in Alberta's foot steps, Calgary has some of the best dog legislation in the WORLD and NO breeds are banned !

People take for granted that pit bulls attack more often than other dogs, and when they bite they do more damage. Where is the hard data to support this? To my knowledge there is no dog bite registry or publicly available reports. The closest thing I can find is a 2007 study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association that identified 28 human fatalities in Canada due to dog attacks since 1990. The sad reality is that dog bites are very common - ask any veterinarian, trainer or medical professional. However, the only ones deemed media-worthy are those involving pit bulls. The Surrey attack on a boy received provincial media coverage, but around the same time a dalmatian severely injured a young woman in Vernon. I also know of a woman whose Yorkshire Terrier was almost killed by a Jack Russell terrier in a dog park over Easter weekend. All of these attacks are tragic and warrant intervention and safety measures - but the media continues to frame dog safety as a pit bull issue, starting public hysteria and ranting about breed bans. When we talk about "types" of people being more dangerous that's discrimination and racial profiling, which we all agree is illogical and unfair. Why do otherwise intelligent people advocate it for man's best friend?

First off, this article does not mention that its an "Opinion" piece, so why is it being written by a Province writer? I thought the media was suppose to be an unbiased source, providing all facts to the public.

It's clear this article doesn't follow that rule, nor do our general media outlets follow it either. The hysteria created by the media is appalling.

Banning the breed is not the answer and never has been. The Netherlands just repealed their 15 year breed ban sighting that it did nothing to stop dog bites. Italy has done the same. The state of Portland overturned a bill proposal after realizing a breed ban would only give the public a feeling of false security.

We need to start looking at owner accountability. Will the owner of Haze be allowed to own another dog without restriction? Absolutely! Was Mr. Hal Harris, after being questioned and released last year, restricted from owning another dog to let roam of leash and potentially attack other dogs? (after clearing demonstrating he was an irresponsible owner) No! Why??? Because it's simply easier for us, the public and public officials, to blame what cannot defend itself and call for obliteration rather than work at addressing and changing the PROBLEM.

Humans are the problem here, and until we realize that, and do something to change it, pit bulls, and the many other dogs involved in attacks/bite/aggression, belonging to careless, irresponsible owners, will continue to wreak havoc. If we spent as much time witch hunting this breed as we did on holding owners accountable, we would no doubt see immense change! Lastly, to the individual who wrote this article, and commented that pit owners are questionable, I take great offense. I have more people wanting to meet my dogs, than those shying away. I am a tax paying, home owning, volunteering member of YOUR community.

I challenge you to meet and get to know some pit bull owners.... I have hundreds I can introduce you to. Until you have met, and spent time with some well rounded pit bulls, your ignorant comments carry no weight. Please, do some reading, from unbiased sources, I think you'll be rather amazed....

To whom it may concern:

I was compelled to respond to your question "is it time to ban this breed?" with a resounding "no!". Breed bans create a false sense of security because when one breed is scapegoated, people neglect to understand that all dogs can and do bite. I have faith that in BC and everywhere we as a society will be able to move beyond the hysteria and fear mongering and adopt an effective approach.

Teach safety around dogs in schools, so that children learn how to avoid dangerous situations. Create stronger legislation holding the owner accountable for the actions of any dangerous dog, regardless of breed. Animal protection laws must be modified and strengthened to prohibit chaining, isolation, and other practices well known to create and escalate aggression in any breed of dog. Banning a breed simply encourages those we should be targeting- bad owners- to move onto other breeds that will in turn create more headlines. Until we adopt a proactive, non-discriminatory approach to dealing with dangerous dogs, bites and attacks will continue, and the victims will continue to be largely children and of course dogs, both of whom have been failed by their caregivers in situations such as last Friday's incident. It's time we held owners responsible for these failures.

Does it surprise me that people are afraid of this breed? No! The media has done a good job convincing people that these dogs are the problem and not to worry about whose holding the leash or lack there of.

We have turned into a society whose way of solving a problem is to ban it. Banning a breed is not the answer, it just leads people into a false sense of security thinking that, “with Pit Bulls gone I must be safe” and that’s not true, ALL dog bite, ALL dogs attack it’s just that the media only chooses to report the ones involving Pit Bulls.

So what about my mom, who’s Yorkshire Terrier on April 13th was attacked and nearly killed by a Jack Russell Terrier? The Jack Russell had to be kicked in the head several times before it let go? Why won’t the media report that? My moms dog was rushed to the vet and could have died from the punctures and swelling to his neck. Why is this not news worthy? why shouldn’t people know about this?

My Pit Bull was attacked by an off leash Australian Cattle Dog leaving her with punctures to her neck and yet that never made the news. Was it because she was the victim?

The answer to ending dog bites comes with education, lets start educating ourselves in regards to ALL DOGS. Calgary has some of the best bylaws and one of the highest compliance rates in the country, their dog bites have dropped by 78% and they didn’t have to ban any breeds, rather they chose to start holding the owners accountable, and guess what it worked! I work hard everyday to show the community how wonderful Pit Bulls truly are, and to protect my dog from a ban.

Educating the public has become by life. We need to make changes to our laws, starting with imposing fines to the owners rather than just killing the dogs. Do you really think that dog bites and attacks will stop with banning Pit Bulls? Give your head a shake, there will be another breed right behind the Pit Bull to take it's place and when it's a Golden Retriever will you be willing to ban them too?

In response to your article; No, it is not time 'pit bulls', it is time to realize that numerous different breeds of dogs bite people, with far more frequency that do pitbull terriers I might add. funny though, how, when a pitbull bites, it is apparently newsworthy, even though their bite pressure is no more strong than any other larger breed dog.

Where was the media when I and my dog were savagely attacked by a Black Lab? I was injured and traumatized! What it is time for is to hold dog owners accountable for their dogs' behaviors, and how they raise their dogs.

There is absolutely no evidence to support that myth that pitbull terriers are more dangerous than other breeds. This is a fact that has been presented to authorities all over North America and Europe.

Implementing a Pit Bull ban will do nothing to solve the problem of aggressive dogs. Breed Specific Legislation is a reactive policy that creates a false sense of security among the general public. Countries like the Netherlands and Italy have repealed their breed specific bylaws in favor of stricter dangerous dog bylaws that target and hold the owners of dogs accountable for the actions. Let's learn from their mistakes and be proactive at solving the issues surrounding dangerous dogs in our cities. Look to Calgary as an example of effective, enforceable legislation that is non-breed specific. Since implementing these policies, dog bite incidences have decreased drastically and owners are not able to simply move onto the next breed of choice.

My response to this editorial is absolutely, unhesitatingly "NO".

This response comes from me as a nurse, a mother, a long time owner of many breeds and mixed breeds and yes, as a current pit bull owner. I have never been bitten by a dog myself in 43 years living in the companionship of them, however I have had a dog that I would never have trusted unsupervised around children, who had to be put in a bedroom if we had people over to prevent her from ever feeling cornered and lashing out - she was a lab/border collie mix.

We adopted her from a shelter when she was eight and she had spent all of those eight years chained in someone's yard. She was surrendered when she snapped at the man's three year old grandson. She loved her life with us - in a house with lots of attention and exercise. But those years of neglect on a chain had done their damage. Small children made her nervous, being cornered made her nervous, and being on a leash when other dogs were around terrified her. All of these made her snarl, growl, and if anyone came too close, bite.

I never would have considered having her euthanized - I could safely manage her behavior and keep others safe from her. She died at 15 and I miss her to this day. In her memory I fight animal abuse and neglect at the hands of humans every day - she never stood a chance to be a normal dog with a start like that. Any dog that is treated like this will react the same way, so matter what breed they are. Dogs have one defense, their teeth. They warn, and they bite. A dog that feels threatened (and it only has to be justified in their mind), cornered, or is in pain will bite.

All of the reported pit bull bites have been from dogs running at large, not properly supervise or with a history of being caged, tethered, abused or neglected. When properly cared for and socialized, as mine are, these dogs are the most loyal, loving and intelligent dogs you can have. They do not have a "short fuse" or "locking jaws", they are not bred to attack humans, and they absolutely can be trusted with children, if, as with any dog, the children can be trusted with dogs.

The pit bulls only crime is being very trainable - therefore easy to use for fighting and other horrific activities - and looking "tough". I come from Oregon, a state that has entertained the idea of a breed ban several times. In the end the lawmakers looked at all the evidence from other countries and from animal advocacy groups and decided, rightly, that the problem was with the people not the dogs, and that banning a breed would solve nothing. Instead they imposed a progressive fine system for dogs running at large, fines and jail sentences for those found to be abusing or neglecting animals, and harsh fines and jail time for the owners of dogs who bite. They have seen a decrease in dog bites.

We need to educate people how to care for their pets properly. We need to have harsher laws to punish those who neglect and abuse animals, and we need to teach our children how to act around dogs, especially ones they don't know. Breed bans won't work any better than gun laws have or prohibition did - the people who have bad intentions and want to do harm will always have a way to get what they want.

In closing, I would invite any reporter or staff member from the Province who would like to spend a day with a pitbull to come and spend the day with me. Expose yourself to the reality of these dogs instead of believing the rhetoric you are reading in your paper and other papers, hearing on the radio and seeing on TV. I know your mind and your life will be changed.

I am a law-abiding, responsible citizen who happens to have fallen in love with American Pit bull Terriers.

I love these dog for the amazing relationship and bond they develop with humans. As a family therapist my dog has assisted me to work with high-risk children and youth who are otherwise slow to trust people. As a former Animal Control Officer I have also seen firsthand that any dog can bite. For instance, in Vancouver over 50% of dog bite incidents involve German Shepherds; while in Delta over 50% of dog bites involve Golden Retrievers, followed by Labrador Retrievers.

What most of the dogs have in common is poor breeding, poor socialization and irresponsible owners. The most recent incident involving the Surrey toddler is reprehensible, but was entirely avoidable. Keeping any dog outside on a chain is a recipe for disaster. I have been bitten twice by dogs- one a Bouvier, the other a German Shepherd- both these dogs were under-socialized, poorly bred and had owners that were not very responsible. I did not blame the breed of dog, I placed blame where it belonged, with the owners.

Irresponsible owners are attracted to multiple different dog breeds and when one breed of dog is not easily available they just move onto another breed of dog. In Lower Mainland cities where Breed Specific Legislation is in effect one tends to see more Dobermans, Rottweilers, and Mastiff breeds owned by irresponsible owners as these dogs are thought to be "tough looking" by people who should not own any breed of dog. In response to dog bite strength, German Shephers and Rottweilers have actually been found to have a stronger bite than Pit Bulls, therefore if a ban was going to be based upon potential bite damage then other breeds would have to also be considered for the ban. Instead of considering a breed ban, it is time to create laws that will actually help prevent bite incidents.

Start regulating breeders to help ensure that only dogs with sounds temperaments are being bred, make it illegal to keep dogs tied up on chains, create stronger laws that effect irresponsible owners whose dogs bite.

That's not to say all pit bull owners are questionable pet owners, just that an inordinate number of questionable pet owners are attracted to pit bulls" I take great offence to this statement. I know literally hundreds of pit bull owners.........and they are all quality individuals. I am a pit bull owner - I have two actually.......I am also a Certified General Accountant, a college instructor, a mother to a 12 year old son, a volunteer at my son's school, a homeowner, a business owner........shall I continue? Do you consider me to be less than quality? I dont' hold it against you for being associated with the less than un-biased media....so please do not categorize me with the few that do harm to this breed's reputation. Breed bans unfortunately provide a false sense of security to the public that results in people being harmed just as often as before the ban.

There is plenty of statistical information on the web concerning this.....perhaps you should take the time to review it. Rather than breed bans, ownership bans should be put in place.....I would love to see the Calgary By-law for Responsible Ownership come to BC....it has greatly reduced the number of bites without banning any breeds. Instead it put the emphasis on the owners and made them accountable through penalties, fines and well....you really should read it yourself. When I was six I was viciously mauled by a german shephard. 158 stiches and six hours of reconstructive surgery to put my face and head back together. I would never ask that german shephards be banned....it was a case of poor ownership. However, if we had laws in place to make the owners' accountable....perhaps I would have been this dog's first victim instead of the ninteenth (yes...I was the 19th victim....and there were more after me).

There is a saying that "the more people I meet, the more I love my dog".....there is also another one "don't ask a dog to be a human....ask the human to be human". Perhaps if we stopped expecting Pit Bulls, Rotties, Shephards etc. to act and behave with human accountability, and asked their owners to be the accountable ones we may be further ahead....after all "a dog is a dog is a dog". Saying NO to ANY breed bans!

I am the owner of Markeydas Pet Grooming and was once an Animal Control Officer in the City of New Westminster for three years. I have been showing and training dogs of all breeds since I was ten years old and I am now a certified Canine Good Neighbor Evaluator for the Canadian Kennel Club. As a Canine Good Neighbor Evaluator, I am required to put dogs of all breeds through temperament tests and evaluate their performance.

I am also the proud owner of "Markeydas Arlo CD CGN ADC SGDC RAMCL RA AGNJ" Arlo, is a rescued 5-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier, who some people would call a “Pit Bull”. Arlo has won many titles and awards and has even posed in Modern Dog Magazine along side some cute little Chihuahuas. Arlo and I have competed in Competitive Obedience, Rally-O, Agility, and have trained in Tracking, Weight Pull, Dock Diving and Arlo is currently in training to be a Service Dog.

I have degenerative disc disease and Arlo is trained to help me to stand up when I am sore and to get me exercising and moving. Arlo also helps to pull me up stairs, and is learning to pick up items for me that are on the floor or in areas out of my reach. He is such an important part of my life and I could not live without him. Breed bans have proven to be ineffective at preventing dog bites, and would severely punish dog owners and lovers like myself that have fallen for the Pit Bull's intelligence and unbelievably loving personalities.

I hope that one-day the laws will hold the OWNERS of aggressive dogs accountable and not the place the blame on my dog, by banning dogs based on the way they look.

This past Easter weekend was a busy one for us, with the tragic yet completely preventable attack on young Justice Paradis. This incident made headlines on every major news cast and was on the front page of all the local papers.

Once again the media jumped on the story and focused on the portrayal of a "Family Pet "Pit Bull" Gone Bad" and neglected to focus on the real issue, the life that dog had as a neglected yard dog, missing out on a great opportunity to educate the public on WHY dog attacks rather than focusing on what breed it was.

The misquoting and misinformation was right there front and centre for all us to see as Global News was quoted on Saturday night claiming that “the City of Vancouver currently has dangerous dog legislation in place requiring all Pit Bulls to be muzzled in public”, which was an extreme error as the City of Vancouver repelled it’s breed specific legislation in 2005 .

The shizzle had hit the fan for the final time as responsible owners stood up to say enough is enough. It's time for FAIR and accurate reporting, we demand it! The message for this weekend was "This is not a BREED issue, this is an OWNER issue" How we care and control our pets, is how we prevent dog attacks and now we create them.

This young Pit Bull involved had been reported by the media as the "family pet", yet was a dog that was kept chained in the backyard of the mother’s home days on end without any thought or care The grandfather was quoted saying "the dog was not good with children" yet was let off its chain by the boy’s father and brought into the home and left with the baby. This story is not of a family pet gone bad, this is a story of a chained animal, an unsocialized, under stimulated, unloved dog who was never given the chance to learn how to behave in a social environment. This was a neglected, abused dog that was doomed by his irresponsible owners.

Animal Advocates has been fighting hard to stop the chaining and tethering of dogs in and around our community for years, but were they ever asked to speak for the cameras about the damage this can cause to a dog? No! and when CTV sought out Shelagh Begg from HugABull with the pitch that they wanted to cover the affects of chaining dogs, for their Saturday night spot, they choose to omit the facts and the truth completely choosing to rather interview and air a woman who's dog was attacked by a Pit Bull a year earlier, leaving its audience to believe that dog aggression and human aggression are one in the same.

Our most important message went out to the media:

Your inaccurate, sensationalized reporting is affecting law abiding citizens and families from all municipalities in British Columbia and around Canada. Your desire to scare the public into believing that this breed is a danger not only to the public but to anyone that owns it, is completely false and ridicules.

We ask that you start reporting fair and accurate information regarding ALL dog attacks and not just the ones that involve Pit Bulls. We owners are tired of fearing for our dogs lives and for our right as Canadians to own and love this breed. We responsible owners are not few, we are not many, we are millions and we are the majority of Pit Bull owners in your communities today.

We will not allow you to damage this breeds reputation further, we have had enough and we will start voicing our concerns more openly and with more power.

Sometimes you are lucky to find someone truly special, for Arlo that person was Sam.

Arlo was adopted through HugABull to Sam Andress and her husband Cam back in October of 2004. Sam, an experienced dog owner, handler and groomer was looking for a dog with something special. She knew right away that Alro, was that dog when she found him on our website.

Since adopting Arlo, big things have been happening for these two.

Arlo and Sam have gone onto win numerous ribbons in Agility, Obedience and in the show rings.

Arlo adores Sam and because of this has accomplished remarkable feats. He has become quite the celebrity in the Pitty Community and we always look forward to hearing of his adventures.

Sam continually gives her time helping HugABull, show the public what great Pit Bulls are really like, through community events and their hard work in the show and out of the show ring.

We know that whatever the future holds for these two superstars HugABull will be cheering them on all the way.

Pit Bull Owners Demand FAIR Reporting

Today we had our Pit Bull Walk for Fair Reporting.

20 or so HugABull volunteers started at the Vancouver Public Library at 2 pm and walked with their dogs to bring awareness to the unfair reporting of Pit Bulls by the media.

Recent reports of a Surrey dog attack have not been telling the entire story - instead reinforcing stereotypes of vicious, unstable attack dogs, making it more important than ever that the public knows the truth. We all know that the vast majority of pit bulls are loving, loyal dogs that live as treasured family pets and pose no threat whatsoever to the community. For every attack story there are hundreds of owners who love, nurture and train their dogs to be wonderful family pets and we wanted to give people the opportunity to meet some of them this afternoon at an awareness walk starting at the Vancouver Public Library.

Trainers, owners and dogs where on site (some in Easter costume) to highlight the best of this wonderful breed.

With reporters on hand we were able to get our message out and where even featured on both Global and CTV news at 6pm

In the five years since it started, the HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society has been making headway on educating the public about pit bulls.

While media reports are quick to place blame on the dog when a human is attacked, the society's executive director, Shelagh Begg, waits before she passes judgment. "The biggest misconception about pit bulls is they are human-aggressive," she said. "That's absolutely false. If anything, they are highly tolerant of people and love being around people."

Begg herself would know. She's the owner of three pit bulls: Bailey, 9, a female she got from the SPCA in 2004; Dizzy, 10, a male she got from the SPCA in November 2007; and Mason, 11, a male with severe skin allergies she got from an animal shelter two months ago. "I believed a lot of those media reports, and I was leery of pit bulls at first, but then I met Bailey," she said. Begg was looking for an athletic dog that could keep up with her while she ran, mountain biked and snowshoed, but she also wanted her dog to be "a bit of a couch potato indoors." "And I wanted a dog that was low-maintenance, one I didn't have to groom every six weeks," she said. " Bailey met all those requirements, and Begg couldn't be happier after five years with her pit bull cross.

It's that local information that Begg hopes to impart at an informational session to be held on Sunday, March 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room 1 at the Burnaby Lake West Sports Complex. "This is the third time we've had an event like this," said Begg. "The first two we advertised as volunteer meetings, and people got the misconception that we were just trying to get volunteers. This event is about giving people more information." That information will include the answers to these questions:

- What do we mean when we talk about a "pit bull"?

- What is breed-specific legislation, and how does it impact the community?

- What is responsible breeding?

- How do I identify a backyard breeder?

- What is HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society?

The event is open to the public and will be of particular interest to pit bull owners and dog-lovers who want to help educate the public about the true nature of these dogs.

HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society, started in 2004, is a registered, non-profit group of "bullie"-loving owners, rescuers, trainers and fans who match abandoned dogs with homes. Volunteers also provide public education, home foster care, and guidance and support to pit bull owners and local shelters.

Begg said one of the society's major tasks is matching up pit bulls from local shelters with responsible new owners. When they first started, they matched up five pit bulls in the first year, but now they average 50 dog matches annually.

The process begins with local shelters and local chapters of the SPCA calling up HugABull and telling them they may have a pit bull ready to be matched up. The dog is screened as it spends a minimum of 30 days in a foster home. "We want to find out how the dog interacts with other animals like cats, and we get a sense of the dog's personality," said Begg.

At the same time, interested owners have to fill out a three-page application before HugABull representatives conduct a phone interview and do reference checks. "If we approve the new owner, we do a meet-and-greet, and, even if that goes well, there's still another 24-hour period where the owner can change his mind," said Begg. "All in all, it's a really extensive process that can take two or three weeks from beginning to end."

Because HugABull is a non-profit group, owners do have to pay a fee for all this legwork, with prices ranging from $150 to $250 per dog, with puppies costing more. When the group isn't matching up pit bulls with new owners, it's educating the public about a breed that often gets a bad rap. "Any time there's a dog attack, there's a rush to say it's a pit bull attack," said Begg. "The first thing I want to know is what breed the dog is. There are a lot of short-haired blocky head dogs (involved in attacks) that aren't pit bulls, but they're called pit bulls. ... I'm not condoning any attack, but I always want to find out what type of dog it is, whether it was socialized and what sort of training the dog received." Begg said owners can train their dogs to "be anything they want them to be," and, while some pit bull owners are guilty of training their dogs for aggressive purposes, the majority are not. "Look at me," she said. "I've got three well-trained pit bulls that are very comfortable around humans.

Oregon: HB 2852 requires pit bull owners to have liability insurance (BSL)

Oregon politicians are apparently trying to exhaust and distract pit bull owners in an attempt to get BSL passed. Your action is needed yet again in Oregon as BSL is proposed against pit bull owners.

HB 2852, introduced yesterday by Representative Vicki Berger, would require that all pit bull owners in the state of Oregon must maintain $1M of liability insurance.

This bill has not yet been sent to a committee. When it is, I will update with contact information for the Representatives in the committee. You may wish to contact all state Representatives in the meantime, or save your energy for the committee.

SECTION 1. { + (1) As used in this section:(a) ‘Keeper’ has the meaning given that term in ORS 609.035.(b) ‘Pit bull’ means a dog that:(A) Is registered or otherwise listed as an American pit bull terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier or American Staffordshire terrier with a dog breed club or league, dog fanciers association, breed registry or similar organization; or(B) Has appearance and physical characteristics that substantially conform to the breed standards of the United Kennel Club for an American pit bull terrier or of the American Kennel Club for a Staffordshire bull terrier or American Staffordshire terrier, as those standards existed on January 1, 2009.

(2) The keeper of a pit bull shall maintain in effect insurance in the amount of $1 million that provides coverage for any economic or noneconomic damages resulting from physical injury or damage to personal or real property caused by the pit bull.

(3) If a court finds a person guilty of violating subsection (2) of this section, the court shall order the person to provide the local dog control district, or, if no local district exists, provide the court, with proof of compliance with subsection (2) of this section within a period established by the court, not to exceed 30 days. If the person complies with the court order by ceasing to be the keeper of a pit bull, proof of compliance shall include details regarding the disposition made of the dog, including the name and address of any new keeper.

(4)(a) Violation of subsection (2) of this section is a Class C violation.(b) Failure to provide proof of compliance with a court order issued under subsection (3) of this section is a Class A violation. Each day that the person fails to provide proof of compliance with an order issued under subsection (3) of this section after expiration of the period established by the court is a separate violation. + }

Humans, not dogs, are problem

We should license dog owners, not ban individual breeds

The more I learn about dogs, the less I realize I know. But I have to confess my first instinct, upon hearing about the vicious pit-bull attack on a man and a horse last Saturday in Mission, was to indulge my propensity for righteous indignation, phone Victoria and order it to follow Ontario's lead and ban the contentious dog breed.

After all, confrontations involving pit bulls or pit-bull-like dogs in Metro Vancouver these days appear almost as common as those involving human gangsters.

Well, not exactly as common as that . . . but you get my drift.

My second response, however, was to say, "whoa there, Jon, lower your hackles."
And instead I contacted top Vancouver dog-trainer Shannon Malmberg, who's worked with canines from what she calls "the power breeds" for more than 15 years. Malmberg, 42, of the appropriately named Zen Dog Canine Training, set me straight on a few things. First, she acknowledged that, yes, pit bulls were bred as fighting dogs, and still are in some places. Look no further than the recent dog-fighting conviction of disgraced National Football League quarterback Michael Vick.

But she also pointed out that purebred pit bulls were not especially aggressive toward humans.
"Dogs that showed reactions to humans were actually culled," she told me. "Dogs needed to be comfortable with a human coming in, breaking them off from a fight and administering to their wounds. So, a true pit is actually a very human-friendly dog." Indeed, she thinks German shepherds, of which she owns a pair, are more inclined to be hostile to people, as are several other breeds.

Malmberg also noted that, in the Mission mauling, three dogs were reported to have been involved. And in the dog world, two may be company, but three's a pack. The pack mentality takes over, whatever the breed.

Certainly, pit bulls, with their bone-crunching jaws, can cause more physical harm to humans than, say, poodles. But mastiffs and other muscular guard dogs can be equally mean machines.
Besides, if you banned pit bulls, those who use them to advertise their masculinity or protect their grow-ops would simply switch to other potentially pugnacious pooches, like the formidable Presa Canario.

The bottom line?

It's individual human owners who pose the true problem, not the specific dog breed. And instead of licensing dogs, we really should be licensing dog owners. I suggest Metro Vancouver
municipalities set up a dog-owner licence scheme, similar to one in New Zealand that allows folks who study a brief manual and pass a short test to register their dogs each year at a greatly reduced rate.

In other words, make being a responsible dog owner a paying proposition. It's a promising approach that would play to humans' strengths and help ensure that, as a matter of personal pride, they and their pack mates become far better educated about their pooches.

Of course, there should also be far stiffer penalties for flagrantly delinquent dog owners -- punishment with some real bite.

"From the outpouring of interest I have received over the past few days, I have learned that pit bulls are beloved pets, friends and family members," Sen. Bruce Starr (R-Hillsboro) said in a statement released on Monday. "Most pit bulls and their owners are caring and responsible. I have no intention of pushing legislation that would threaten pit bulls or the rights of their owners."

Radical new bill talks of banning pit bulls in Ore., euthanizing them

A new bill on pit bulls that hasn't even hit the Senate floor yet is already getting a lot of heat from folks on both sides of the issue.

Under a bill from Sen. Bruce Starr's office, owning a pit bull would be illegal in Oregon and the state would punish those who own one by euthanizing the dog, slapping the owner with thousands of dollars in fines and perhaps even throwing them in jail. And if your pit bull killed someone? Then you could be fined $125,000, spend five years in jail or both.

Those who already own a pit bull would be grandfathered in, so to speak. They would have to obtain a permit to keep the pit bull (for a fee) and provide a certificate from a veterinarian showing that the dog had been sterilized.Here is the summary that is laid out in the draft of the bill:Prohibits keeping of pit bull. Creates exception for pit bulls currently in state upon meeting certain conditions. Declares pit bull dangerous dog and makes keeping of pit bull punishable by euthanization of dog and by maximum of $6,250 fine, one year's imprisonment, or both.

Back in 2007 a group of dogs opened our eyes to the serious effects of neglected manage. The 4 Lovely ladies had us all wondering, how on earth someone could let this go untreated? Sadly 3 years later, the cases of untreated manage are becoming more and more common and even more shocking.

Lovely was emaciated, completely bald, covered in oozing sores, and swollen all over, particularly in her legs and feet. As though she knew we were there to help, Lovely used her last vestiges of energy to lick the assessor's face and lean into her for comfort, before trying to take a few steps after her to the car. It was the last time she would be semi-aware and stand up to try to walk on her own. Lovely was let go in peace on the afternoon of May 24th, 2007.

From Lovely, came The Lovely Fund a fundraising plan to help get dogs like Lovely the help they need.

Currently Mason is in our program, neglected beyond comprehension it broke our hearts to see this senior in the shelter. His eyes completely swollen shut, missing hair, itching mess of allergies and covered in open sores. This boy was a mess but his heart was as clean, soft and warm as any we have ever seen. Mason is now recovering, his eyes are open (although we believe he is slightly blind) his hair is slowly starting to grow back and his temperament as solid as a rock.
